Detailed Overview: The Library Technician orders new books and journals; performs routine reference, article retrieval and literature searches; assists users in locating information sources and materials; locates, obtains, and provides materials from internal and external sources, as established and/or in accordance with established interlibrary loan procedures; maintains and updates systems and records utilizing computer software and database systems. This position may work in more than one location. Responsibilities:
- Assists with collection development using a variety of resources, including consulting with departments about their information and educational resource needs.
- Orders new books, journals, and related ephemeral materials by completing appropriate purchase requests and order forms, recording receipts, and forwarding invoices
- Performs original and copy cataloguing and classification of all materials in the library collection according to established standards and procedures based on the National Library of Medicine; processes catalogued items for circulation.
- Uses specialized library software to maintain library catalogue records; creates and manipulates specialized forms and textbases.
- Maintains physical library collection and space by following established circulation procedures for lending and receiving library materials, identifies and follows established procedures for retrieving overdue materials; receives, checks in, and claims new journal issues; shelves library materials in accordance to established systems; keeps library tidy; stocks pamphlets displays and files as necessary; assists in weeding projects.
- Maintains files of ephemeral publications such as reports, booklets, and related materials; updates systems and records utilizing established standards, procedures, and software applications.
- Performs routine reference, article retrieval, and literature searches using both manual and electronic indexes and databases. Refers complex or detailed reference or search requests to a Librarian.
- Assists library users by orienting them to library resources, instructing them in the use of electronic databases and other bibliographic and information search tools.
- Locates and obtains requested materials for users from within Fraser Health (FH) and from external sources by use of established interlibrary loan procedures, utilizing electronic interlibrary loan management software, or completing forms in accordance with copyright laws.
- Performs timekeeping function for library staff in FH as required.
- Manages, maintains, updates, and customizes online resources and databases; designs and maintains Library Services online presence.
- Assists with ongoing needs assessments and marketing, including creation of promotional material.
- Collects, maintains, compiles, and reports on statistics.
- Performs administrative tasks such as assisting in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and forms, maintaining documentation of departmental meetings, writing and maintaining technical manuals relating to library specific software, processing invoices and cheque requisitions, ordering and maintaining inventory of office supplies for the library, and troubleshooting technology.
- Maintains a current level of knowledge in the library profession through review of the literature, attendance at educational programs, and through contact with peer professionals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
Grade 12, completion of a recognized two year Library Technician program and two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid BC Driver's License. Access to a personal vehicle for business related purposes.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

- Ability to keyboard at 50 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of library software for interlibrary loans and library cataloguing.
- Proficiency in the use of personal computers and related computer programs.
