The Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che’tles7et’h’ First Nations (KCFN) is a modern Treaty Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island, with our community rooted in Kyuquot/Houpsitas. Through the Department of Lands & Resources, KCFN exercises stewardship responsibilities across 6,300 hectares of Treaty Lands and 149,000 hectares of Treaty Rights territory, encompassing diverse ecosystems, river systems, and extensive shoreline.
The Stewardship Manager (SM) provides strategic leadership for KCFN's Stewardship Program, overseeing the protection and responsible management of KCFN lands, waters, and natural resources (Hahuulth). Reporting to the Director of Lands & Resources, this position leads stewardship staff, monitoring programs, compliance activities, and environmental initiatives while ensuring stewardship practices align with KCFN laws, values, and long-term priorities. The Stewardship Manager works closely with community members, government agencies, industry, and partner organizations to advance stewardship, conservation, and sustainable land and resource management across KCFN territory.
Duties/Tasks/Responsibilities:
- Lead the day-to-day operations, strategic planning, and continuous improvement of the Stewardship Program
- Supervise, mentor, and support stewardship staff, including recruitment, performance management, training, and professional development
- Oversee ecological, environmental, fisheries, and cultural monitoring programs, including stewardship compliance activities
- Develop and maintain stewardship policies, procedures, operational systems, and monitor protocols
- Oversee stewardship data management, reporting, and program evaluation to support decision making and funding requirements
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with KCFN members, government agencies, industry representatives, and partner organizations
- Prepare funding proposals, manage agreements, and represent KCFN at technical, regional, and government meetings
- Promote safe work practices, ensure regulatory compliance, and perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Diploma or degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Forestry, Biology, Geography, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in natural resource management, environmental stewardship, or a related field, including experience leading staff, projects, and budgets
- Strong knowledge of environmental stewardship, land and resource management, and regulatory frameworks
- Experience developing policies, procedures, operational plans, funding proposals, and technical reports
- Strong leadership, communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills
- Experience working with Indigenous governments or within a cross-cultural environment is strongly preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and database systems
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License
- Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), MED A3, and ROC-M certifications, or willingness to obtain
- Ability to travel regularly between Kyuquot, Campbell River, and other locations, including overnight travel and occasional evenings and weekends
- Satisfactory Police Information Check and standard employment background checks
- Knowledge of Nuu-chah-nulth culture is an asset
