As a Community Peace Officer, you will play a critical role in making Canmore a place that is safe and enjoyable to live in and spend time in while enjoying the beautiful town every season while conducting motor vehicle, foot and bike patrols.
Position Overview: The Community Peace Officer is responsible for supporting community safety and livability by providing residents, businesses, and visitors with prompt and reliable service in a professional manner. This involves responding to and investigating complaints by educating and/or enforcing municipal bylaws and/or provincial statutes listed on their appointment. Community Peace Officers are highly visible in the community while conducting patrols on foot, bicycle and in vehicles with a focus on conducting education and enforcement of monthly departmental operational priorities for bylaw and traffic enforcement infractions. Community Peace Officers track daily activities including patrols, investigations, public engagement, warnings, and tickets, and enter this into a database for reporting and analysis.
As a member of a professional, fun, and dedicated team, you are tasked with building strong relationships in the community and developing respect and rapport with the diverse visitors and residents in the community through positive interactions. Keeping customer service and safety as the top priorities, you will be highly visible in the community while working collaboratively with other town departments and partner agencies to increase understanding and compliance with town bylaws and Provincial Statutes. You must have a Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment or the ability to obtain an appointment in accordance with the Alberta Peace Officer Program Policy and sign an agreement with the Town to reimburse all costs incurred for Community Peace Officer Induction Training should the employment contract be terminated by the employee within 12 months of completing the training.
You must submit a recent (within 3 months) successful physical assessment test result accepted by the Alberta Peace Officer Program (i.e. PARE or COPAT) with your application.
Core Accountabilities:
- Act as a service ambassador through community outreach and education on municipal bylaws and provincial statutes*
- Conduct education and enforcement activities related to municipal bylaws and provincial statutes
- Contribute to a safe and welcoming community through education-based enforcement
- Respond to and investigate complaints from residents, town staff, businesses and visitors regarding bylaw and provincial statue* infractions
- Execute monthly departmental operational priorities through visible and proactive patrols conducted on foot, bicycle and in patrol vehicles
- Issue warnings, orders and tickets for bylaw and provincial statute* infractions in accordance with applicable legislation
- Assist other Town departments with bylaw enforcement activities

Community Engagement and Presence
- Maintain high visibility throughout assigned community areas to support public safety, multi model transportation and livability
- Provide prompt and reliable service to residents, Town staff, businesses, and visitors in a professional manner
- Engage with interest holders, community members, and visitors to build relationships and promote community awareness and voluntary compliance with bylaws and regulations
- Conduct foot and bicycle patrols of extended duration to monitor community conditions and respond to concerns
Documentation and Reporting
- Track and document daily activities including patrols, investigations, public engagement, warnings, and tickets
- Enter all activity data into designated databases for reporting and analysis purposes
- Maintain accurate records of enforcement actions and community interactions
- Prepare reports that support departmental operational priorities and performance metrics
- Prepare case files, court disclosure packages, and attend Court proceedings as required
Professional Standards and Compliance
- Maintain knowledge of municipal bylaws, provincial statutes, and the legal system relevant to the role
- Interpret and apply legislation and municipal bylaws accurately and consistently
- Operate with integrity and professionalism in all interactions with interest holders and colleagues
- Comply with RCMP enhanced reliability standards and Alberta Public Security Peace Officer Program policy and procedure manual professional code of conduct requirements

- Participate in the Town’s health and safety program and comply with all applicable legislation, policies, directives, procedures, and safe work practices relevant to assigned work

Education & Qualifications:
Required
- Alberta Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment (or equivalency) or the successful completion of the Alberta Community Peace Officer Induction Training Program and the ability to obtain a Community Peace Officer appointment within twelve months of hire
- Must be able to meet the provincial standard on the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE), Correctional Officer Physical Aptitude test (COPAT), Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT), or Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) physical fitness test upon hire as part of Provincial Community Peace Officer Induction Program required training
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse interest holders in a professional manner
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing, documentation, and public interaction
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, computer systems, and database management for recording daily activities and enforcement data
- Ability to work independently while conducting patrols and investigations
- Physical fitness to perform duties on foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols for extended periods
- Ability to obtain and maintain RCMP enhanced reliability screening status and the Alberta Community Peace Officer Program professional standards check
- Commitment to providing education and enforcement activities with a lens for diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred/Asset
- Current enrollment or completion of a post-secondary education in a related field such as police foundations
- Previous experience in bylaw enforcement, community peace officer role, or community safety roles
- Knowledge of Alberta municipal bylaw enforcement practices and provincial statutes
- Experience with community-based policing or education-focused enforcement approaches
- Completion of a police-based training program or equivalent professional law enforcement training
- Knowledge of parking management systems and traffic enforcement procedures
- Familiarity with human-wildlife conflict management and related municipal bylaws
- Bilingual capabilities to serve diverse community populations
- Conflict de-escalation, conflict resolution, and community engagement training
- Experience preparing case files and presenting evidence in court proceedings
- Certification in first aid or emergency response procedures
- Incident Command System training: 100, 200 and 300
Salary & Benefits:
- Hourly Rate: $43.51 to $47.10 per hour. Pay rate will be calculated based on successful candidate’s related work experience and education
