The Project Manager, Controls & Automation is responsible for leading the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of automation and controls systems while managing capital and operational projects. This role bridges hands-on technical expertise in industrial automation with disciplined project management to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions that support business objectives.
The ideal candidate is both technically strong and highly organized, capable of working cross-functionally with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, IT, and external vendors.
Key Responsibilities
Automation & Controls
- Lead the design, programming, integration, and troubleshooting of PLC, HMI, SCADA, robotics, vision systems, and industrial networks.
- Standardize controls architecture, programming practices, and documentation.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, quality, safety, and uptime.
- Oversee system upgrades, retrofits, and new equipment automation.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to controls technicians and engineering staff.
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety, electrical, and regulatory standards.
Project Management
- Plan, manage, and execute capital and operational projects from concept through commissioning.
- Develop project charters, timelines, budgets, and risk mitigation plans.
- Coordinate internal resources and external vendors, integrators, and OEMs.
- Track project progress, control costs, and ensure on-time delivery.
- Lead project reviews, post-implementation evaluations, and lessons learned.
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with Operations to align automation and project priorities with production goals.
- Collaborate with Maintenance and Engineering to ensure long-term system reliability.
- Support procurement activities including vendor selection, specifications, and contract oversight.
- Communicate project status, risks, and outcomes clearly to leadership.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field) or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years experience in industrial automation and controls within a manufacturing environment.
- 3+ years experience managing technical or capital projects.
- Experience in automotive, metal forming, or high-volume manufacturing preferred.
Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens).
- Experience with SCADA systems (Industrial Automation – ignition) is an asset.
- Experience with robotics, HMIs, motion control, and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, ProfiNet, etc.).
- Understanding of machine safety standards and electrical design principles.
- Ability to review and develop technical specifications and drawings.
