Dog Attendant - Weekends Required with some optional hours weekday afternoons
The Homestead Nottawa is looking for an experienced, reliable and caring Canine Attendant to join our team.
We are a unique, outdoor-focused dog resort where the day is spent working directly with dogs, maintaining a safe and enriching environment, and making sure every dog receives excellent care.
This is a hands-on animal-care position. It is active, physical work and includes plenty of cleaning and the less-glamorous parts of caring for a large group of dogs.
Position Details
- Part-time
- Starting at $17.60/hour and up to $20.00/hour, based on experience
- Weekends are REQUIRED both Saturday and Sunday (8 hour shifts) with one weekend off a month or equivalent (e.g. every other Saturday off)
- Weekday afternoons are optional when available (3-5 hour shifts)
- 8-hour shifts scheduled between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM
- Must live within approximately a 30-minute drive of The Homestead Nottawa
What You'll Do
- Supervise and safely manage groups of dogs during play, outdoor adventures and rest periods
- Monitor canine health, behaviour and overall wellness throughout the day
- Recognize and communicate changes in behaviour, appetite, energy level or signs of illness or distress
- Provide feeding, medication and routine wellness care as directed
- Maintain clean, sanitary kennels, play areas, indoor spaces and outdoor areas
- Complete regular waste removal and other cleaning duties
- Assist with bathing and basic grooming as needed
- Help with dog arrivals and departures and provide a positive experience for clients
- Participate in organized activities and enrichment for the dogs
- Take photos and videos of the dogs for client updates and social media
- Assist with light grounds and facility maintenance
- Work safely and confidently with dogs of different sizes, breeds, personalities and energy levels
- Communicate clearly with the rest of the team and contribute to the smooth operation of the resort
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma
- At least 2 years of experience working directly with animals in a professional setting. Examples include working for a horse farm, veterinary office, dog daycare or boarding facility, kennel, farm or other animal-care business. Personal pet ownership alone does not qualify as professional animal-care experience.
- Strong understanding of animal wellness, safety and behaviour
- Excellent observation skills and attention to detail
- Dependable and committed to working weekends consistently
- Flexible and able to adapt when the needs of the dogs or team change
- Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in all weather conditions
- Physically capable of an active workday that includes walking, cleaning, lifting and handling dogs
- Comfortable doing all aspects of animal care, including cleaning and waste removal
- Able to work independently while also being a strong team member
- Responsible, mature and professional
- A calm, patient approach to handling animals
