Padgett Business Services – Markham West provides accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax, and business advisory services to small and medium-sized businesses and individuals.
We take a practical, client-focused approach to accounting and taxation and work closely with our clients to understand their businesses and provide timely, reliable support.
As our practice continues to grow, we are looking for an Accounting Associate or Senior Accounting Associate to join our team. We are open to candidates at different stages of their accounting careers. The level of responsibility and compensation will be tailored to the successful candidate's experience and capabilities.
The Opportunity
This position offers broad, hands-on exposure to accounting, taxation, CRA matters, and client service.
For a junior candidate, the role provides an opportunity to develop practical accounting and tax skills while working closely with experienced team members.
For a more experienced candidate, the position will involve greater responsibility for managing client files, preparing and reviewing accounting and tax work, communicating directly with clients and the CRA, and assisting with more complex engagements.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on experience, responsibilities may include:
- Performing full-cycle bookkeeping and accounting, including journal entries, account reconciliations, adjusting entries, and year-end procedures
- Preparing year-end working papers and financial statements
- Preparing or assisting with personal (T1) and corporate (T2) income tax returns and related schedules
- Preparing HST returns, payroll filings, and other government remittances
- Reviewing accounting records and identifying discrepancies, unusual transactions, and required adjustments
- Coordinating with clients to obtain accounting records, tax information, and supporting documentation
- Communicating directly with clients regarding accounting, tax, and financial reporting matters
- Handling CRA correspondence, Notices of Assessment/Reassessment, information requests, and other CRA inquiries
- Preparing professional correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, and supporting documentation
- Maintaining accurate and well-organized electronic client files
- Supporting tax planning and other accounting or business advisory assignments
- For experienced candidates, independently managing assigned client files from information collection through completion and assisting with the review and development of junior staff
- Performing other accounting, taxation, client service, and administrative duties as required
Qualifications
We welcome applications from candidates with varying levels of experience.
For Accounting Associate candidates:
- Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
- Recent graduates with relevant accounting education will be considered
- 1–3 years of accounting, bookkeeping, or tax experience
- Sound understanding of basic accounting principles
- Strong willingness to learn and develop practical accounting and tax skills
For Senior Accounting Associate candidates:
- Approximately 3+ years of relevant accounting and tax experience, preferably in a public accounting, bookkeeping, or small-business accounting environment
- Strong understanding of full-cycle accounting and year-end procedures
- Experience preparing financial statements and corporate tax returns
- Ability to independently manage client files and communicate directly with clients
- Experience dealing with CRA inquiries and correspondence
- Ability to identify accounting and tax issues and bring them to the attention of management
A CPA designation is not required for this position.effectively
Technical Skills
Experience with some of the following would be an asset:
- QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop
- Sage 50 Online and Sage 50 Desktop
- DT Max or other Canadian tax preparation software
- Microsoft Excel, including formulas, lookups, PivotTables, data organization, and reconciliation
- Microsoft Word and Outlook
- CRA Represent a Client and My Business Account
- Adobe Acrobat and electronic document management
- Microsoft 365 and cloud-based applications
We also value candidates who are comfortable with technology and interested in using AI-assisted productivity tools, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar applications, to improve efficiency and workflow. Experience using AI tools for research, information organization, drafting professional communications, document processing, and other accounting-related tasks is an asset.
Pay: From $52,000.00 per year
