Animal Care Assistant – Emergency Department Vets Around the Corner – Emergency Department (VAC-ED) Port Perry, ON | Full-Time | $20.00 – $25.00/hour (based on experience) Anticipated Start Date: July 13, 2025
Who We Are
Vets Around the Corner – Emergency Department (VAC-ED) is a privately owned, independently operated emergency veterinary service serving Port Perry and the surrounding region. As one of the few independently owned emergency facilities in Ontario, we're building something different — a team-first, patient-focused environment where your skills are respected, your growth is supported, and your contributions genuinely shape how we operate.
We are proud to serve as a designated First Responder Clinic for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre, and work in close partnership with local animal rescues and our Community Veterinarian Program (VAC-CVP). This isn't just a job — it's a chance to be part of a mission-driven organization doing meaningful work in our community every day.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Animal Care Assistant (ACA) to join our emergency department. This is a hands-on, frontline role where clinical patient care is the priority — and where every team member is also trained and expected to deliver professional, compassionate client communication as a natural extension of that care.
This role is full-time, currently operating Friday through Sunday on rotating day, evening, and overnight shifts, with a clear and planned transition to 24/7 rotating shifts within the next year as the department expands.
What You'll Do
- Safe handling, restraint, and movement of animals presenting for emergency care
- Supporting RVTs and DVMs during triage, diagnostics, treatments, and emergency procedures
- Monitoring hospitalized and critical patients
- Maintaining cleanliness, sanitation, and infection control standards in treatment and kennel areas
- Preparing and turning over treatment spaces between cases
- Serving as a point of contact for emergency clients, both in person and by phone
- Collecting accurate patient histories and intake information
- Communicating emergency processes, estimates, and next steps to clients with empathy and professionalism
- Managing admissions, discharges, and payment processing as needed
- Maintaining accurate medical and administrative records in our practice management system
What We're Looking For
- Required: Minimum 1 year of experience as an Animal Care Assistant (ACA) in a veterinary setting — emergency or urgent care experience is a strong asset
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
- Ability to remain calm, focused, and compassionate in fast-paced, high-pressure situations
- Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities without losing attention to detail
- Team-oriented, with the confidence to work independently when the situation demands it
- Flexibility and reliability for rotating emergency shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays
What We Offer
- $20.00 – $25.00/hour, commensurate with experience
- Extended health and dental benefits
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Paid time off and vacation
- Employee discount on veterinary services
- Free on-site parking
- A real opportunity to help build and shape the culture, workflows, and standards of a growing emergency department
- Involvement with VAC-CVP, our community veterinarian outreach program
- A supportive, values-driven leadership team that genuinely invests in its people
Schedule
Full-time | Currently Friday – Sunday, rotating days, evenings, and overnights Anticipated expansion to full 24/7 rotating shifts within the next 12 months
