About the Opportunity
The Sr EHS Specialist & Industrial Hygienist provides guidance and support to the EHS team and internal and external clients on environmental, health, and safety matters. The position supports operations, maintenance, and Pharmaceutical Development Services, establishes standard site procedures, exchanges expertise with other sites, and helps ensure the site follows applicable EHS regulations and practices.
This position leads all facets of the site Industrial Hygiene Program while also supporting health and safety programs, project risk assessments, audits, investigations, training, and regulatory or corporate reporting.
What You’ll Do
- Maintain a safe working environment and report potential hazards.
- Lead the creation and integration of EHS programs and management systems.
- Collaborate with internal partners and site leadership to gain support and help ensure compliance.
- Lead all facets of the Industrial Hygiene Program at the site.
- Develop industrial hygiene sampling plans and sampling strategies.
- Develop Occupational Exposure Limits and industrial hygiene analytical methods.
- Conduct industrial hygiene assessments for existing products and evaluate technologies that may improve containment.
- Participate in cross-functional teams that evaluate and enhance containment for existing processes.
- Lead the Designated Substances Program.
- Lead the Industrial and Office Ergonomics Program.
- Lead the Respiratory Protection Program and fit testing, including PAPR maintenance and testing as necessary.
- Lead combustible dust hazard assessment and management.
- Support incident investigations.
- Support the closure of Joint Health and Safety Committee audit findings.
- Conduct and support risk assessments.
- Develop and conduct EHS training, including orientation, monthly safety talks, and department-specific training.
- Conduct equipment reviews.
- Act as an advisor and resource to the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Conduct risk assessments for new projects.
- Attend project kick-off meetings and ongoing project meetings.
- Evaluate containment and industrial hygiene requirements for new projects.
- Develop and support active-specific procedures and training for potent compounds.
- Liaise with project managers, process engineers, and clients.
- Provide backup and support to other EHS team members and the Health Centre.
- Lead or participate in EHS audits and investigations involving regulatory bodies, clients, and corporate representatives.
- Implement Global EHS Standards.
- Complete regulatory and corporate reporting as required.
- Perform alternating or rotating shift work as required.
- Follow all Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with team members, model positive team principles, and partner with others to meet project and departmental objectives.
- Perform all duties in strict compliance with Patheon quality systems, Standard Operating Procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practice.
- Maintain a clean and orderly workspace.
- Engage in and follow departmental systems, including visual management and scheduling systems, to support a smooth and efficient workflow.
- Remain client and patient conscious.
- Understand Key Performance Indicators and seek to improve team performance by identifying opportunities for system improvement and participating in problem solving.
- Model positive thinking, remain open to change, and help the team adapt to changing priorities and new ways of working.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve the execution of procedures.

- Continuously improve skills and knowledge in the related field.
- Perform other duties assigned by managers or supervisors as needed.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or Certified Industrial Hygienist designation.
- At least five years of EHS experience in the chemical, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical industry.
- At least three years of industrial hygiene training or experience.
- Previous experience conducting presentations and training for different levels within an organization.
- Client or project management experience.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, friendly environment.
- High integrity when handling confidential information.
- Demonstrated professionalism.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
- Proficiency in the English language.
- Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities and ways of working.
Work Location, Schedule and Environmental Conditions
- The position is located in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.
- The standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
- Alternating or rotating shift work may be required.
- Work may take place in office, cleanroom, warehouse, equipment, and machinery environments.
- Good Manufacturing Practice safety standards must be followed.
- Cleanroom requirements prohibit hair products, jewelry, makeup, nail polish, perfume, exposed piercings, facial hair, and other restricted items.
- Contact lenses are not permitted in applicable environments; prescriptive glasses will be provided.
- Exposure to loud equipment or machinery noise may occur.
- Some degree of PPE is required and may include safety glasses, safety shoes, gowning, gloves, a lab coat, ear plugs, a hair net, a beard cover, a safety apron, and occasional respirator use.
- The role may involve mild physical discomfort from dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights.
- The role requires the ability to lift 40 pounds without assistance.
- Physical activity may include light physical effort, walking, sitting, or standing for limited periods.
- Occasional operation of equipment, including keyboard equipment, may be required.
- The position may involve lifting light items for limited durations.
- The work is typically located in a comfortable indoor area.
