POSITION TITLE: Line Cook / Prep Cook (Full Time)
LOCATION: Village Grocer, Markham, Ontario
TITLE OF IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Chef, Kitchen / Prepared Foods
Scope
The Prep Cook works in the Village Grocer kitchen and is responsible for the food preparation, assembly, packaging, labeling and inventory replenishment for our prepared salads. You pride yourself on your professionalism and enjoy working as part of a team in a fast-paced and occasionally stressful environment. Your work ethic, drive, ability to take direction and passion to get things done makes you the perfect candidate for this position.
Role Requirements
- Certificate in culinary arts or a related area from a college or technical school
- Three (3) years’ commercial cooking experience minimum
- Maintains a high standard of personal hygiene & appearance
- Adheres to company dress code (uniform, hat/hairnet)
- Maintains a clean and safe work-space environment
- Endure medium to high levels of physical exertion (standing, bending, lifting, etc.)
- Kitchen equipment familiarity and handling (knives, measuring utensils, weigh scales, cooking stovetops, ovens and other kitchen equipment, etc.)
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail towards recipe specifications and production
- Observes company code of conduct, policies and store rules
- Food safety and handling knowledge
Key Responsibilities
- Answer, report and follow instructions from executive or sous chef
- Assist in preparation set-up of kitchen and food stations by bringing in necessary food items
- Weigh, measure, mix and prep ingredients according to recipes
- Assists in cutting, precooking and portioning foods
- Prepare (steam, grill, boil, bake or fry) protein, vegetables, and other ingredients
- Assembles dishes and garnishes where required
- Cleaning work station with proper storage / disposal of leftover food
- Maintains an organized, clean and safe working environment
- Adhere to all provincial health and civil code regulations
- Maintaining a positive and professional approach with co-workers
- Assists part-time employees and perform other duties and assignments as directed
Working Conditions
- Inside, loud, hot, cold (in storage freezer on occasion), slippery floors, fast paced
- May sustain minor cuts, burns and bruises on occasion while on the job

- Basic Mathematics: Prep Cooks are required to measure and weigh product for recipes

- Job Commitment: Punctual and able to work variable shifts as assigned by the department manager

Pay: $19.00-$21.00 per hour
