With strong presence in the utility sector, Chimax is expanding its electrical engineering services for transmission division.
The Opportunity
The Director, Electrical Design Services will lead the day-to-day technical and operational activities of Chimax’s Electrical Engineering Division. This role is the engine of the division, responsible for project delivery, design quality, team performance, and client satisfaction. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation in electrical power systems and substation design, paired with the project management experience and leadership skills to run a growing, client-facing engineering practice.
TECHNICAL & DESIGN LEADERSHIP
- Provide senior technical oversight across all electrical engineering projects, with depth in MV/HV substation design, electrical power systems, protection and control, and power system analysis at multiple voltage levels.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce technical design standards that reflect sound engineering practice, applicable codes (CSA, IEEE, IEC), and Chimax’s quality expectations.
- Review and approve project proposals, design packages, and technical deliverables prior to client submission.
- Drive the use of design tools and platforms — including AutoCAD Electrical and Substation Design Suite (SDS) — to support efficient and accurate project delivery.
- Provide technical mentorship to the technologists, and designers within the division.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT & DELIVERY
- Oversee the planning and execution of all active projects within the division, ensuring commitments to clients are met on time, within scope, and on budget.
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of project proposals, hour estimates, and project schedules, ensuring they accurately reflect client requirements and Chimax’s capabilities.
- Evaluate incoming opportunities and make go/no-go recommendations based on technical fit, resource availability, and commercial viability.
- Optimize the allocation of design resources across concurrent projects, balancing workloads and aligning team capabilities to project requirements.
- Maintain close contact with clients throughout project delivery, gathering feedback and resolving issues promptly to maintain satisfaction and long-term relationships.
TEAM LEADERSHIP & PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
- Lead all aspects of team management within the division, including recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluation, professional development, and compensation.
- Establish a collaborative and high-performance team culture consistent with Chimax’s values and reputation.
- Define and maintain clear organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities within the division as the team grows.
- Lead and participate in annual performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and development support to all team members.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & CLIENT RELATIONS
- Support developing new client relationships and expanding Chimax’s presence in the substation design and electrical power systems market.
- Represent Chimax at client meetings, technical presentations, and industry events across Canada and the United States.
- Identify opportunities to deliver integrated projects that leverage Chimax’s combined electrical, civil, and structural capabilities.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s, Master’s degree Or Diploma in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Electrical Power Systems; substantial project management experience in the electrical power industry required.
- Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in electrical design, with demonstrated expertise in substation design, protection and control, and power system analysis.
- Proven experience leading design teams and managing complex, multi-discipline projects in a client-facing environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to represent Chimax credibly with clients and industry partners.
- Collaborative and organized, with the drive to build a growing practice within a well-established engineering firm.
Pay: $160,000.00-$180,000.00 per year
