Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator (various locations)
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible to safely operate heavy equipment, completing equipment related tasks including bulk dirt movement, loading trucks, sloping and shaping as per the specifications and direction from the Foremen and Superintendent. It is the responsibility of the operator, to complete these tasks in a safe and efficient manner to avoid injury to themselves or others or damage to the equipment, other property or to the environment.
Equipment used will include: Excavators, Dozers, Graders and Loaders. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
· Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and environmentally proficient manner, following all safety standard operating procedures and task-specific protocols implemented;
· Strong technical knowledge and proven track record of Bulk Dirt Movement in both a Civil Construction and Pit and Stockpile settings;
· Ensures all JHA’s are complete as required and turned into the Foremen and / or Superintendent;
· Completes their daily equipment log and safety checks on each unit operated;
· Report any equipment deficiencies as they encounter them and advise of any repairs or maintenance required on equipment;
· Ability to work in adherence to safety practices, procedures and work site regulations and promote safe work behaviour in others;
· Clean and Grease the equipment as necessary;
· Park the equipment in a safe manner when not in use;
· Perform periodic safety, maintenance or service checks to ensure proper functions of the equipment;
· Perform road work, excavation work, lifting work, as required;
· Respond to signals and directions by staff and work in coordination with them;
· Maintain proper coordination and cooperation with the Traffic Control and Dispatch system while working, so that normal activities are not disrupted;
· Maintain a valid driver’s license at all times;
· Other duties may be assigned by your Supervisor, as required.
The Ideal Candidate:
Required Skills/Experience
· 4 + years of heavy equipment operator experience;
· Pad Cat and GPS experience, an asset;
· Have a Safety-Focused approach to work, and ability to handle and assist in emergency situations;
· Methods and techniques for proper set up of the equipment to maximize efficiency;
· Basic understanding of engineered drawings, charts, diagrams, maps, grade stakes and surveys;
· Must have physical ability to withstand long hours in a strenuous and potentially high hazard work environment;
· Possess physical strength to operate heavy and power-driven equipment – ability to lift/move up to 50lbs;
· Strong commitment to be a team player, build trust and be accountable;
· Able to work independently with minimal supervision;
· A high level of self-management & personal leadership skills;
· Proactive and punctual;
· Eagerness to learn and grow
· Able to work remotely from home, typically on a 2 week on / 2 week off rotation (exact rotation to be determined depending on the project needs);
· Able to work 12-hour shifts (either days or nights as needed);
· Successfully pass Fit for Duty pre-employment testing (drug and alcohol screening), if required.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to extensive moderate to heavy manual labour for prolonged periods of time. This will include ongoing maintenance and cleaning of working area. Worker will be required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. Ability to climb ladders is necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include acute central and peripheral vision as well as depth and color perception.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high. Dusty working conditions could also necessitate the need for a respirator to be worn. Employee can expect a variety of tasks in a high paced working environment for the duration of shift.
