Job Summary

Under the direction of the Resettlement Assistant Program Coordinator, the Settlement Counsellor serves as the primary point of contact for newly arrived Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) and asylum claimants, providing support throughout their initial resettlement journey. The role conducts needs assessments, facilitates access to essential services, provides orientation and referrals, and supports clients in navigating life in Canada. The position also provides on-site support at MAGMA housing locations and assists clients in their transition to permanent housing and increased independence.

Core Position Responsibilities

Client Support

Prepare for the arrival of MAGMA clients, ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place.
Provide a warm and supportive reception and serve as a primary point of contact throughout the resettlement process.
Process financial incidental and meal allowances, as required.
Assist clients in accessing essential services during the resettlement period

Needs Assessments, Orientation and Information

Perform Needs Assessments and Referrals (NAARS) to identify the client's immediate and essential needs that can be addressed during the early stages of their resettlement journey.
Conduct initial orientation sessions to familiarize newcomers with life in Canada, community resources, rights, responsibilities, and available services.
Provide detailed information about healthcare, education, employment, language training, and other essential services.
Refer clients to additional settlement programs and community resources as needed.

Documentation and Reporting

Maintain accurate records of all services, client interactions, referrals, and activities provided.
Ensure all client information, case notes, and service activities are accurately documented in required databases and reporting systems.
Prepare and submit required documentation and reports in a timely manner

Ongoing Settlement Support

Facilitate access to ongoing settlement services, including school registration, healthcare services, community supports, and referrals to language training programs.
Provide referrals to appropriate follow-up programs and services, such as Case Management Services (CMS) and Life Skills programs.

MAGMA Housing responsibilities

- Provide on-site support at MAGMA housing locations.
- Conduct routine inspections of temporary accommodation before and after client occupancy.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks within MAGMA housing units (e.g., replacing light bulbs, assembling furniture, changing furnace filters, resetting breakers, and addressing other minor issues that do not require specialized trades).
- Educate clients on identifying, preventing, and addressing minor maintenance issues, and on when to report maintenance concerns to staff.
- Report maintenance issues requiring specialized repairs.
- Enforce the code of conduct for clients in MAGMA properties.
- Support clients in their transition from temporary to permanent housing by providing orientation, practical assistance, and referrals to services that promote successful settlement and independence.

Required Skills & Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent; a diploma or certification in Social Work, Counselling, Human Services, Customer Service, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience in a client-facing role, preferably in a community services, non-profit, or settlement agency environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to foster trust and understanding with clients.
- Attention to detail and proficiency in documentation, reporting, and data management.
- Problem-solving and decision-making abilities to address clients and program challenges effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experienced in database management
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, based on client and program needs.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and ability to transport clients, when required
