Assistant Terminal Manager – Digby

Location: Digby, Nova Scotia
Reports To: Terminal Manager – Digby

Northumberland Ferries Limited / Bay Ferries Limited is seeking a highly motivated and organized Assistant Terminal Manager to support terminal operations in Digby, Nova Scotia.

This leadership role is ideal for an experienced operations professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about safety, customer service, team leadership, and operational excellence. The successful candidate will assist in overseeing daily terminal operations while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality service delivery for passengers, commercial traffic, and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Compliance

Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across all terminal operations.
Support implementation and continuous improvement of the Terminal Safety Management System.
Ensure compliance with safety, security, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Operational Management

Assist in managing daily terminal operations to ensure efficient and safe vessel loading and unloading.
Support traffic management involving commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, RVs, and reservations.
Monitor passenger manifests and loading procedures.
Assist with shipping and receiving activities.

Financial & Administrative Oversight

Support management of terminal budgets and operating expenses.
Assist with revenue protection, cash handling, and accounting controls.
Monitor operational performance and identify improvement opportunities.

Staff Leadership

Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and employee training.
Coordinate employee scheduling, shift rotations, overtime, vacations, and call-ins.
Support performance management and employee development.
Assist with labour relations and grievance handling involving unionized and non-unionized staff.

Customer Experience & Contractor Management

Analyze customer feedback and identify service improvements.
Help manage contractor relationships and service standards.
Ensure contractors maintain high standards of customer service and cleanliness.

Regulatory & Environmental Oversight

Liaise with regulatory agencies as required.
Assist in environmental compliance, including waste management and potable water sampling.

Qualifications

Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Experience in operations, terminal, logistics, transportation, or facility management.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Knowledge of operational safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
Ability to read and interpret accounting and financial reports.
Strong decision-making skills and ability to work independently.

Working Conditions

Combination of office and field work.
Regular visits to terminals, docks, vessels, and customer locations.
Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and occasional overnight travel.
