SE Design has a career opportunity for an Engineering Operations Manager in our Sherwood Park, Alberta, office.
Position Description:
- We are seeking a motivated individual with a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering or consulting, including at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- The Engineering Operations Manager will lead and oversee the delivery of civil engineering, geotechnical, geomatics, and infrastructure projects across Alberta. This leadership role will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations of our Sherwood Park office, optimizing workflows, and ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and in compliance with applicable standards.
- The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, operational leadership, and a commitment to quality, safety, and client satisfaction—particularly in projects involving municipal infrastructure and First Nations communities.
- This role will involve periodic interoffice travel to Cold Lake for project implementation and execution.
Position Duties:
- Oversee the daily operations of office and field projects undertaken by the SE Design project delivery team, including client management, project planning, execution, and delivery. Our Sherwood Park office currently consists of 12 engineering, technical, and field staff, with the intent of continuing to grow business operations.
- Provide experienced engineering leadership and technical support to assist in successful project delivery.
- Collaborate with the SE Design project delivery team to communicate scope, schedules, and expectations to team members.
- Oversee the design and approval of civil engineering works (grading, stormwater management, underground utilities, and surface improvements) associated with municipal projects according to Provincial and Municipal standards.
- Oversee the preparation of documentation and reporting developed by the technical team to ensure deliverables are accurate, aligned with project requirements, and communicated effectively to clients.
- Engage in business and client management, including maintaining client relationships and developing proposals.
- Manage project financial activities, including accurate billing, transparent client communication, revenue tracking, invoice issuance, and accounts receivable management.
- Coordinate staff and sub-consultants for planning, legal survey, environmental, and other consultant services.
- Provide guidance, training, and mentoring to SE Design’s engineering and field teams.
- Validate core competencies for team members to ensure that technical staff meet corporate competency requirements.
- Anticipate client questions or concerns, proactively address potential project impacts, and help ensure on-time delivery and client satisfaction.
- Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and proactively respond to time-sensitive issues with exceptional time management and people leadership skills.
- Facilitate team meetings to support efficient, effective, and timely project delivery and to help ensure client satisfaction.
- Participate in the implementation and maintenance of SE Design’s safety program and COR certification.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution.
- A minimum of 15 years of experience in the design, approval, and project management of civil engineering projects within Canada.
- P. Eng. status suitable for registration with APEGA.
- Familiarity with provincial and municipal standards for civil works, including current design standards and technical specifications. An understanding of stormwater management or geotechnical engineering principles would be considered an asset.
- Proven ability to oversee a business segment, work in a variety of client settings and successfully develop a team of technical and professional staff.
- Excellent communication skills, including teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Strong project management and coordination skills.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence with a minimum of 4 years of verified Canadian driving experience.
- Positive work ethic and adaptability to a variety of projects.
- Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office and typical engineering software.
