Job Summary:

Job Title: Support Worker

Location: Edmonton, AB (Northside)

Reports To: Team Lead, Supervisor, Manager, Senior SSC Management

The Support Worker provides direct care and assistance to high-risk youth, adults, families, and individuals within SSC programs, fostering a safe, structured, and supportive environment. Depending on your experience and qualifications, you may be placed in either a high-risk youth living program, a high-risk family reunification program, or both. The Support Worker is responsible for meeting clients' daily needs, ensuring their safety, and supporting the implementation of individualized healing/care plans. Clients often have complex backgrounds, including mental health challenges, disabilities such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ADHD, ADD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), depression, anxiety disorders, trauma histories, and behavioral challenges. This role involves ongoing communication and collaboration with team members, adherence to SSC policies and procedures, and maintaining detailed documentation.

Direct Client Support:
Provide daily care and supervision to high-risk clients, addressing emotional, physical, psychological, and social needs.
Assist clients with personal routines, hygiene, meal preparation, medication administration, medical appointments, and household tasks.
Facilitate and participate in both indoor and outdoor activities such as arts and crafts, board games, movie nights, walks, community events, fitness, sports, and recreational outings to support social development and engagement.
Encourage engagement and participation in planned programming designed to promote positive behaviors, coping strategies, and life skills.
Support clients in developing and adhering to individualized schedules, structured routines, chore lists, and daily expectations to build consistency and promote responsibility.
Reinforce therapeutic goals by integrating them into daily interactions, teaching and modeling emotional regulation, social skills, and problem-solving techniques.
Foster a trusting relationship with clients by practicing empathy, active listening, and respect for individual experiences and identities.

Behavioral Management and Crisis Response:
Reinforce individualized safety and behavioral management plans, providing proactive and reactive interventions as needed.
Utilize trauma-informed care principles and evidence-based de-escalation techniques during incidents.
Monitor and respond to behavioral triggers with empathy and professionalism, ensuring a calm and supportive environment.
Document behavioral incidents thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner, and communicate immediately with supervisors regarding safety and risk management concerns.
Collaborate with team members to develop and revise crisis response and intervention strategies based on observed client behavior and therapeutic guidance.

Documentation and Reporting:
Accurately complete and maintain daily logs, incident reports, behavioral tracking forms, medication records, and other required documentation.
Ensure all documentation adheres strictly to SSC standards, policy and procedures, legal requirements, and confidentiality guidelines.
Regularly update Team Leads, Supervisors, and SSC Senior Management client progress, significant events, and ongoing care strategies to reflect on healing plans.
Assist in preparing reports and summaries for team leads, supervisors, and senior management as requested.

Safety and Compliance:
Conduct routine safety and environmental checks of the program space, promptly addressing and reporting any identified hazards.
Consistently adhere to and enforce SSC safety protocols, emergency procedures, licensing requirements, and health standards.
Actively participate in regular emergency preparedness drills and educate clients about safety expectations and procedures.
Aid in educating clients about safe evacuation procedures during regular fire drills.
Report and manage potential risks to clients, staff, and the facility through appropriate channels.

Communication and Collaboration:
Maintain professional and effective communication with colleagues, team leads, supervisors, medical professionals, therapists, and caseworkers.
Participate actively in team meetings, training sessions, case reviews, and healinh plans discussions.
Provide feedback and suggestions to team leads and supervisors to enhance care strategies and client support.
Assist in planning and coordinating activities and routines that are developmentally appropriate, inclusive, and aligned with client care plans.

Professional Development:
Complete mandatory training, including First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Mental Health First Aid, and other relevant training provided by SSC.
Engage regularly in professional development opportunities to remain current on best practices in mental health care, trauma-informed care, and behavioral interventions.
Demonstrate ongoing personal growth and skill enhancement through participation in workshops, courses, mentorship, and certifications.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Satisfactory professional reference checks (minimum of two).
Criminal Vulnerable Sector Check (within six months prior to start date).
Child Intervention Check (within six months prior to start date).
Valid First Aid with Level C CPR & AED certification
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or CPI training (preferred)
Suicide Prevention, Risk Assessment & Management (preferred)
Food and Safety (preferred)
Trauma Informed Care (preferred)

Qualifications & Skills: Required:

Experience working in support roles with high-risk individuals in mental health, group home, residential, or community care settings.
Strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and crisis management skills.
Ability to effectively implement and follow individualized care and safety plans.
Proficiency with technology and electronic documentation systems.
High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

Post-secondary education in Social Work, Support Work, Psychology, Health Care Aid, Disability Studies, or a related field.
Certifications in Trauma-Informed Care, Suicide Prevention, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, and Conflict Resolution.
Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Work Environment:

Fast-paced, dynamic setting supporting individuals with significant emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social challenges.
Requires high levels of adaptability, patience, resilience, and proactive problem-solving skills.
Shift work including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts may be required.
Frequent exposure to crisis situations, behavioral escalations, and high-stress environments.
Commitment to confidentiality, ethical conduct, and maintaining professional boundaries.
