Position Title: Special Projects Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.)

Position Summary
The Special Projects E.I.T. provides engineering, software-development, and hands-on technical support for Canada Pump and Power’s special projects. The position supports the development of digital applications, connected equipment, pumping systems, structural designs, and new technologies.
This role combines office-based engineering with practical shop and fieldwork. The successful candidate will assist with designing, assembling, testing, and improving new systems from initial concept through field implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Application and Software Development
- Support the ongoing development and improvement of Canada Pump and Power applications, including:
- Mighty Pumps Finder
- Mighty Dredge Finder
- Mighty Barge Finder
- Mighty Pumps Cloud Software
- Assist with developing equipment-selection logic, technical databases, user workflows, and new application features.
- Collect, verify, organize, and maintain equipment specifications and performance data used within the applications.
- Translate engineering requirements and operational needs into clear software requirements.
- Test applications, identify errors, document issues, and validate the accuracy of calculations and recommendations.
- Develop user instructions, technical documentation, training materials, and internal procedures.
- Support the integration of sensors, instrumentation, controllers, cameras, communications equipment, and remote-monitoring systems with Mighty Pumps Cloud Software.
Engineering Calculations and Design
- Perform engineering calculations under appropriate professional supervision, including:
- Pump sizing and selection
- Total dynamic head calculations
- Flow, pressure, velocity, and friction-loss calculations
- Suction conditions and net positive suction head calculations
- Pump power and efficiency calculations
- Pipeline and hose sizing
- System curve development
- Steel structural frame calculations
- Load, stress, deflection, stability, and connection calculations
- Equipment weight, centre-of-gravity, and load-distribution calculations
- Assist with designing and evaluating pump packages, steel frames, barges, piping systems, equipment supports, enclosures, and related systems.
- Prepare calculations, drawings, specifications, bills of materials, reports, and equipment-selection documentation.
- Review manufacturer data, technical drawings, equipment manuals, pump curves, and performance information.
- Clearly document design assumptions, inputs, limitations, applicable standards, and design criteria.
- Coordinate the review and approval of engineering work by the responsible professional engineer when required.
Prototyping, Testing and Fieldwork
- Assemble, configure, and test edge devices used for equipment monitoring and data collection.
- Install and connect sensors, controllers, cameras, communications equipment, power supplies, wiring, and enclosures.
- Assist with assembling pumping systems, piping, hoses, valves, instrumentation, and related equipment for testing.
- Develop test plans and experimental procedures with clear objectives, methods, measurements, and acceptance criteria.
- Set up and safely operate experimental pumping systems and test equipment.
- Conduct controlled experiments to evaluate pump performance, system behaviour, sensors, software, communications, and equipment configurations.
- Collect and analyze operating data, including flow, pressure, temperature, vibration, engine information, and equipment status.
- Compare test results against engineering calculations, manufacturer data, and expected system performance.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, communication, and software issues.
- Document test configurations, observations, results, deficiencies, and recommended improvements.
- Modify prototypes and test arrangements based on findings and repeat testing as required.
- Assist with field installation, commissioning, inspection, testing, and troubleshooting at Canada Pump and Power and customer locations.
- Travel to project sites as required and work safely around operating pumping systems and industrial equipment.
Project Support
- Assist with planning and coordinating special projects from initial concept through testing and implementation.
- Research and compare equipment, components, suppliers, pricing, availability, and lead times.
- Coordinate with operations, sales, maintenance, fabrication, engineering, suppliers, and software developers.
- Track schedules, budgets, purchasing requirements, testing results, action items, and project deliverables.
- Maintain organized project records, calculations, drawings, technical data, test results, and revision histories.
- Identify technical risks, missing information, and opportunities to improve equipment, software, and internal processes.
- Perform other technical and special-project duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, civil, structural, mechatronics, electrical, software, or another applicable engineering discipline.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics, pumping systems, mechanical design, and structural engineering principles.
- Interest or experience in software development, automation, instrumentation, electronics, communications, or remote-monitoring systems.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, pump curves, and performance data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with CAD, programming, databases, hydraulic modelling, or structural-analysis software is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to shops, yards, and project sites as required.

Working Conditions
This position is based in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and combines office, shop, yard, and field responsibilities. The employee may periodically work at Canada Pump and Power facilities, industrial sites, and customer locations.
The position may involve occasional travel, outdoor work, lifting and handling components, working near active pumps and electrical or mechanical equipment, and wearing required personal protective equipment. All work must be completed in accordance with Canada Pump and Power’s health and safety requirements and under appropriate professional supervision.
