Position Summary
The Artistic Director is responsible for the overall artistic leadership of Bloom Dance Company.
This is a hands-on leadership position responsible for developing programs, maintaining teaching excellence, mentoring instructors, teaching classes, choreographing routines, overseeing productions, and creating an exceptional experience for every student.
The Artistic Director will work collaboratively with the Director of Operations, who is responsible for registrations, scheduling, customer service, administration and the day-to-day business operations of the studio.
Key Responsibilities Artistic Leadership
- Lead and develop Bloom's artistic vision.
- Establish teaching standards across all programs.
- Inspire a positive, professional and creative studio culture.
- Ensure consistency and excellence throughout the studio.
- Continually evaluate and improve all dance programming.
- Build Bloom's reputation as a leader in dance education.
Teaching Responsibilities
The Artistic Director will maintain an active teaching schedule and lead by example through exceptional instruction.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching recreational classes.
- Teaching performance and competitive classes where applicable.
- Teaching specialty programs and workshops.
- Teaching private lessons when appropriate.
- Providing substitute coverage when required.
- Mentoring students of all ages and abilities.
Program Development
The Artistic Director will develop and oversee Bloom's artistic programming, including:
- Recreational Dance Programs.
- Performance Programs.
- Competitive Programs.
- Preschool Dance Programs.
- Adult Dance Programs.
- Specialty Workshops.
- Master Classes.
- Summer Camps.
- Summer Intensives.
Responsibilities include:
- Developing curriculum.
- Creating yearly program progressions.
- Designing lesson frameworks.
- Evaluating and introducing new programming.
- Ensuring consistency across all instructors.
Choreography & Productions
Lead the artistic direction of:
- Annual Year-End Recital.
- Community performances.
- Studio showcases.
- Performance programs.
- Competitive choreography where applicable.
Responsibilities include:
- Music selection.
- Choreography oversight.
- Production planning.
- Technical rehearsals.
- Overall artistic quality of performances.
Costume Selection
The Artistic Director will:
- Select costumes for all recreational, performance and competitive routines.
- Ensure costumes complement choreography and music.
- Ensure costumes are age appropriate and reflect Bloom's artistic standards.
The Director of Operations will oversee budgeting, ordering, inventory management and parent communication.
Teacher Leadership
The Artistic Director will be responsible for building and leading Bloom's teaching team.
Responsibilities include:
- Recruiting outstanding instructors.
- Interviewing prospective teachers alongside the Owner.
- Mentoring and developing instructors.
- Conducting classroom observations.
- Providing coaching and constructive feedback.
- Leading professional development.
- Building a collaborative, respectful and inspiring team culture.
- Maintaining high teaching standards throughout the studio.
Program Planning
Working collaboratively with the Director of Operations, the Artistic Director will:
- Develop annual programming.
- Recommend instructor assignments.
- Design class structures.
- Recommend class lengths.
- Assist with annual scheduling.
- Identify opportunities for future growth.
Student & Parent Relationships
Serve as the primary artistic contact regarding:
- Student evaluations.
- Class placements.
- Dance development.
- Performance opportunities.
- Artistic concerns.
- Student progression.
Administrative matters including registrations, tuition, scheduling and studio policies will be managed by the Director of Operations.
Seasonal Commitment
This is not a traditional Monday to Friday position.
The Artistic Director is expected to provide leadership during evenings, weekends and key studio events, including:
- Year-End Recital.
- Summer Camps.
- Workshops.
- Auditions.
- Community performances.
- Registration periods.
- Staff training.
- Other major studio initiatives.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Extensive dance teaching experience.
- Strong leadership and mentorship skills.
- Experience developing dance curriculum and programs.
- Exceptional choreography skills.
- Outstanding communication and organizational abilities.
- A positive, professional and collaborative leadership style.
- A passion for mentoring dancers and instructors.
- A current Vulnerable Sector Check (or willingness to obtain one).
Previous experience as an Artistic Director, Studio Director or Senior Instructor is considered a strong asset.
