Nupqu Limited Partnership is a growing business, proudly owned by member bands of the Ktunaxa Nation since 2009. With offices in Cranbrook, Castlegar and Fernie, BC, Nupqu conducts a wide variety of work: providing environmental, biological, archeological, forestry, contract administration and safety related consulting services to a variety of clients throughout the Ktunaxa Traditional Territory. Job Overview
Environmental Technicians support the delivery of environmental monitoring, assessment, and compliance programs across a range of industrial, resource, and infrastructure projects. This role is primarily field-based and requires adaptability, strong technical skills, and the ability to work safely and independently in dynamic environments. Technicians are responsible for collecting high-quality field data, following established protocols, and supporting project teams to meet regulatory, client, and internal requirements.
Duties
- Environmental Technicians may be assigned to a variety of tasks depending on project needs, experience level, and seasonality, including but not limited to:
- Conducting environmental monitoring and field assessments (e.g., water quality, wildlife, vegetation, erosion and sediment control, reclamation, and compliance monitoring)
- Collecting, recording, and managing field data accurately and consistently
- Operating and maintaining field equipment and instrumentation
- Following established standard operating procedures (SOPs), sampling protocols, and health and safety requirements
- Working on active industrial sites, including mine sites, often in proximity to heavy equipment
- Supporting senior technicians, project managers, and biologists with field program delivery
- Communicating field observations, issues, and changes in conditions to supervisors in a timely manner
- Completing daily field logs, timesheets, and required documentation
- Representing the Environmental Division professionally when working with clients and site personnel
Health, Safety, and Compliance Expectations
Safety is a critical component of the Environmental Technician role. Technicians are expected to:
- Comply with all Nupqu health and safety policies, site-specific safety requirements, and client rules
- Participate in safety meetings, tailgate talks, and hazard assessments
- Identify and report hazards, incidents, or near misses immediately
- Maintain required certifications and training (e.g., site orientations, first aid, etc.)
- Exercise sound judgment in the field and stop work if conditions are unsafe
Work Environment and Conditions
- Work is predominantly field-based and may involve long days, early starts, variable schedules, and travel
- Fieldwork occurs in all weather conditions and across challenging terrain
- Seasonal workload fluctuations are common, with peak demand during the field season
- Some projects may require multi-day site rotations or extended time away from home

Reporting Structure
Environmental Technicians report to Project Managers, Senior Technicians, or designated supervisors within the Environmental Division, depending on project assignment.
Education and Experience Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- Post-secondary education in a related discipline such as: Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology, Forestry or Geography;
- Experience with air, water, wetlands, and waste regulations and knowledge of Environmental Management Systems
- Preference will be given to candidates who are registered or eligible for registration with a professional governing body (eg. BC Institute of Agrology, College of Applied Biology, ECO Canada)
- Knowledge of applicable regulatory, legal and other requirements within the areas of responsibilities assigned, as they may apply to Elk Valley environmental aspects
- Previous work experience in Environmental Monitoring, Environmental Field Assessments, surveys and Technical Report Writing;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite® applications (i.e., Outlook, Word and Excel)
- Proven safety track record & experience driving on resource roads;
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Additional skills and certifications (preferred)
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- Able to work shift work of up to 7 days, 12+hrs/day in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment;
- Hold the following valid certifications (OFA-1, H2S, Electrofishing Supervisor, Swift Water Rescue, UTV, BC Class 5, Mine Supervisor);
- Registration or eligible for registration with a Professional Association such as: The College of Applied Biology, Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals, BC Institute of Agrologists, or equivalent;
- Schedule flexibility
- Ability to navigate, adapt and anticipate environmental matters within a fast-paced work environment
