Job Summary:
The Cultural Engagement Coordinator supports ATC’s Child & Family Services by leading culturally grounded prevention initiatives that strengthen cultural identity, family wellness, and community connection for children, youth, families, and caregivers. Reporting to the Community Education & Engagement Supervisor, the Coordinator develops and coordinates Family Trees, Cultural Plans, cultural teachings, ceremonies, land-based learning, and traditional healing opportunities that reconnect Members to their family, Nation, language, culture, and traditions. This position has a primary service focus within Fort McMurray First Nation (468), with outreach and engagement guided by Nation-identified priorities, community needs, and opportunities to strengthen relationships with Members and families.
Working collaboratively with Member Nations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Child & Family Services teams, and community partners, the incumbent integrates Cree and Dene cultures into Child and Family Services programs and services. The role connects children, youth, and families to teachings, ceremonies, language, and land-based learning while serving as a resource to Child and Family Services employees, supporting practices aligned with First Nations values and traditions.
The incumbent is expected to uphold the safety, dignity, and best interests of children and youth while demonstrating professionalism, cultural respect, sound judgment, and a commitment to culturally responsive service delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Create and maintain Family Trees for children in care that promote family reunification, preserve family relationships, cultural heritage, and community ties.
· Advise and oversee individualized Cultural Plans for all children in care, Prevention 1:1 participants, Post Majority Support Services participants, and caregivers, ensuring cultural priorities are reflected in service planning.
· Facilitate access to Elders, Knowledge Keepers, ceremonies, land-based learning, language, traditional healing, and other cultural opportunities based on individual and family needs.
· Receive and action referrals from Child & Family Services to arrange culturally appropriate services, activities, and supports for children, youth, and families.
· Provide cultural guidance to Child & Family Services employees on local protocols, traditions, language, ceremonies, and culturally appropriate practices.
· Design, deliver, and review culturally grounded workshops, cultural activities, support groups, and community initiatives in collaboration with Member Nations and community partners.
· Encourage participation in cultural activities that promote identity, belonging, healing, and connection to local Nations’ traditions and community.
· Complete and maintain documentation, program statistics, outcome measures, Family Trees, Cultural Plans, referrals, and reports in accordance with organizational requirements.
· Assist with the coordination of cultural resources, program spaces, and community events through the support of the Community Team Case Aide.
· Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Diploma or degree in Indigenous Studies, Human Services, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Education, Community Services, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience delivering cultural programming, prevention services, or community-based supports for First Nations children, youth, families, or communities.
- Knowledge of Cree and Dene languages, cultures, traditions, ceremonies, protocols, language, and land-based practices, with the ability to incorporate them into programs and services.
- Experience preparing Cultural Plans, Family Trees, or other culturally grounded resources that support children, youth, families, and caregivers.
- Ability to build respectful working relationships with Member Nations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, caregivers, community partners, and external service providers.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and relationship-building skills.
- Understanding of trauma-informed, strengths based, family centered, and culturally responsive approaches to service delivery.
- Strong facilitation, communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills.
- Excellent organizational, time management, including managing priorities, coordinating activities, meeting deadlines, evaluating outcomes, and preparing reports.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and complying with applicable legislation, organizational policies, privacy requirements, professional standards, and ethical practices
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn organizational databases and information systems.
Requirements:
· Clear Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Check.
· Clear Child Intervention Record Check.
· Valid Class 5 License with a clear Drivers abstract.
· Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
· Position is based in Fort McMurray, with a primary service focus supporting Fort McMurray First Nation (468) Members, families, children, youth, and caregivers. Expected to travel to Fort McMurray First Nation (468) 4-5 days per week.
· Ability to travel regularly throughout Member Nations and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
· Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
