Job Description
Tl’azt’en Nation is seeking a reliable, safety focused, and community minded Fisheries Technician to support fisheries, aquatic habitat, environmental monitoring, and stewardship activities within the Natural Resources Department.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, has an interest in fish, water, habitat, and land stewardship, and is comfortable supporting field work, data collection, monitoring, and project documentation.
About the Role
The Fisheries Technician will assist with fisheries field work, fish and habitat assessments, water quality monitoring, environmental sampling, field logistics, data entry, and reporting support. The role helps ensure field information is collected accurately and safely while supporting the Nation’s interests in fish, water, habitat, and land based resources.
The successful candidate will work with Natural Resources staff, Guardians, consultants, community members, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and external partners as required.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist with fisheries field work, including fish sampling, stream assessments, habitat surveys, and aquatic monitoring.
Collect, record, and organize field data related to fish, water quality, habitat, and environmental conditions.
Support water quality monitoring, including temperature, turbidity, flow, pH, and other indicators as required.
Assist with fish counting, identification, handling, measurement, tagging, or sampling where trained and authorized.
Support habitat restoration, enhancement, and monitoring projects.
Assist with environmental monitoring related to development, forestry, mining, road work, water crossings, or other land use activities.
Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS units, tablets, cameras, water quality meters, nets, sampling tools, and safety gear.
Support field logistics, including equipment preparation, site access, safety checks, and vehicle or boat preparation where required.
Maintain accurate field notes, forms, photos, maps, and data records.
Enter and organize field data into spreadsheets, databases, GIS systems, or project files.
Assist with preparing reports, summaries, maps, and field updates for internal use, funders, consultants, or external partners.
Support community engagement, stewardship activities, youth learning opportunities, and land based education where required.
Follow all safety procedures, field protocols, environmental procedures, and equipment handling requirements.
Identify and report environmental concerns, fish habitat impacts, safety hazards, or field observations to the supervisor.
Maintain confidentiality and respectful handling of cultural, environmental, and community knowledge.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Grade 12 or equivalent required.
Certificate, diploma, coursework, or training in fisheries, natural resources, environmental science, biology, ecology, resource management, or a related field considered an asset.
Experience with fisheries field work, environmental monitoring, aquatic habitat work, natural resources, or land based stewardship considered an asset.
Experience working with First Nations, Indigenous communities, Guardian programs, or community based stewardship considered a strong asset.
Experience using GPS, field tablets, water quality meters, sampling equipment, maps, or GIS tools considered an asset.
Swiftwater, boat safety, electrofishing, fish identification, ATV, bear safety, wilderness first aid, WHMIS, or related field safety training considered assets.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License considered an asset.
Criminal Record Check may be required.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in office, community, outdoor, field, river, lake, stream, forest, and remote environments.
Frequent travel to field sites may be required.
May require walking over uneven ground, carrying equipment, working near water, and working in variable weather conditions.
May involve early mornings, long field days, seasonal work, or occasional evening or weekend work depending on project needs.
Exposure to wildlife, insects, water hazards, remote locations, and physically demanding field conditions may occur.
Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety procedures is required.
