About Town House and 849 Thrift Boutique
Established in 1967, Glace Bay Citizens Service League is a volunteer based non-profit, charitable organization which offers programs that improve the quality of life of the community of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, and surrounding areas, in response to needs identified by residents.
849 Thrift Boutique is a social enterprise of Town House Citizens Service League and exists to create a revenue source that supports Town House programming while delivering an exceptional shopping experience for our customers. We strive to deliver excellent quality pre-loved goods to customers by engaging in retailing used apparel (clothing, accessories, and footwear) donated by the members of the public for the purpose of raising money to deliver programming that benefits citizens of Glace Bay and surrounding areas.
Position Overview
Thrift Store Sales Associate is a casual/ on-call position that provides support to the Thrift Store Coordinator of 849 Thrift Boutique. The Thrift Store Sales Associate is responsible for daily tasks such as handling transactions, sorting, hanging, and tagging donated items and for maintaining store standards to contribute to a healthy working and shopping environment for personnel and customers.
The Thrift Store Sales Associate reports to the 849 Thrift Boutique Coordinator and is an employee of Town House, Citizens Service League.
Primary Job Functions
- Provide service to customers in a professional, welcoming, and efficient manner according to Town House and 849 Thrift Boutique standards.
- Process transactions accurately using POS system, including cash handling, credit/debit card payments, and loyalty card programs.
- At the direction of the Thrift Store Coordinator, processing of donated items; rotation of items and the clearance of donated items in a timely fashion. Processes include receiving, sorting, tagging, displaying and clearance of donated items, cleaning of products & store, providing leadership to volunteers; uphold 849 Thrift Boutique and Town House standards for merchandise.
- Following all Town House procedures for store operations, including opening and closing the store; procedures for accepting, sorting, pricing donations; security procedures for staff and volunteers, handling of cash, and other relevant procedures.
- Promote excellence in the customer service experience for all visitors to 849 Thrift Boutique. Support Town House Prestige Card & Loyalty Card programs with discretion in a manner that maintains dignity and respect of customers.
- Supporting 849 Thrift Boutique Coordinator in store retail sales initiatives, including but not limited to promotions, merchandising, window displays, and special events.
- Inform, educate, and promote Town House programming to customers so they are aware of the positive impact of their purchase and other programs available to them.
- Attend regular Town House staff meetings or thrift store staff and volunteer meetings.
- Be available to be called in to work on an as-needed basis to provide relief or supplemental coverage.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Retail/ thrift store experience preferred.
- Proficiency with POS system and familiarity with retail technology tools.
- Business or social service experience considered an asset.
- Strong organization, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; willing and able to work with a variety of people. Friendly, outgoing, and demonstrating appreciation of the volunteers, staff, and customers at the thrift boutique.
- Ability to sensitively and respectfully assist individuals who represent a diverse and/ or marginalized population sector.
- Willingness to stay up to date on thrift retail trends and find creative ways to drive foot traffic to our store.
- Ability to thrive in a flexible, fast-paced and growth-oriented environment, while maintaining a sense of humor and a positive, solution-oriented approach.
- Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of Town House – Citizens Service League and our social enterprise, 849 Thrift Boutique.
Requirements
- Requires ability to stand up to 3-7 hours per day with frequent walking, standing, bending, squatting, pulling and pushing.
- Reach above shoulder height and below waist level.
- Requires ability to keyboard at computer for up to 2 hours per day.
- May be required to lift items 20-50 pounds and assist in 2-person lifts in excess of 50 pounds
- Successful criminal record check and vulnerable sector search
Compensation and Hours
Pay: $17.50 per hour
Hours: Work hours may range from 0 to 28 hours per week, depending on availability and departmental needs.
There are no guaranteed minimum hours of work. Hours will fluctuate based on operational requirements, staff absences, and seasonal demand. The employee will be scheduled or called in to work on an as-needed basis to provide relief or supplemental coverage.
Town House Hours of operation are from 9am – 4pm Monday - Friday.
849 Thrift Boutique open hours 10am – 4pm or 12pm-6pm Tues – Thurs.
