SolidWorks Draftsperson / Design & Shop Support
Grande Prairie, Alberta
A growing custom fabrication company in the Grande Prairie area, we are looking for an experienced, professional draftsperson who wants to become a long-term part of our team and grow with the company.
We build a wide variety of custom equipment, including:
- Custom truck decks and complete truck rig-ups
- Winch tractors and oilfield equipment
- Custom trailers
- Industrial fabrication
- Custom barbecues and smokers
- One-off custom projects and prototypes
Primary Responsibilities
Our biggest priority is finding someone with strong SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD experience who can work directly with our fabrication team and take projects from an idea through to a finished, buildable product.
Responsibilities would include:
- Creating accurate 3D models, assemblies and fabrication drawings
- Producing detailed shop drawings for our welders and fabricators
- Creating flat patterns for our in-house press brake work
- Creating laser-ready drawings/files for our cutting requirements
- Nesting and preparing parts for efficient material use where applicable
- Designing parts specifically around bending, forming, welding and assembly
- Maintaining accurate drawings and revisions as projects change
- Measuring and reverse-engineering existing trucks, equipment and components
- Working directly with our welders to make sure designs are practical and efficient to fabricate
- Helping take customer ideas, sketches and concepts and turn them into finished designs
Our Fabrication Capabilities
We currently do our own forming and press brake work in-house, so accurate flat patterns and bend information are an important part of this position.
We are also moving toward doing our own cutting in-house, so experience preparing files for laser cutting, CNC cutting, nesting and sheet-metal fabrication would be a major asset.
We want our drafting department and fabrication shop working together—not as two separate operations.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong SolidWorks experience or comparable 3D CAD experience
- Experience with sheet metal design and flat patterns
- Understanding of laser/CNC cutting files
- Knowledge of press brake forming and bend allowances/deductions
- Understanding of steel and aluminum fabrication
- Ability to produce accurate fabrication and assembly drawings
- Good mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
- Comfortable spending time on the shop floor with our welders
- Organized and capable of managing multiple projects and drawing revisions
- Someone who takes pride in seeing their drawings become finished equipment
- Someone interested in a long-term position with a growing company
Opportunity to Grow
While drafting and design are the primary focus, we’re looking for someone who may eventually want to take on more responsibility.
For the right person, this position could grow into involvement with:
- Shop organization and workflow
- Project coordination
- Material and production planning
- Working directly with customers on designs
- Helping coordinate projects between drafting and fabrication
- Leadership and organizational responsibilities as the company grows
We’re not necessarily looking for someone who wants to sit behind a desk all day. We want someone who enjoys being part of the build, working alongside the people fabricating it, solving problems and continuously improving our products.
Compensation
Wages will be based on experience, knowledge and capabilities.
We’re willing to pay accordingly for the right person who brings strong drafting, SolidWorks and fabrication knowledge to our team.
If you’re looking for an opportunity where every project is a little different and you want to grow alongside a Canadian custom fabrication company, we’d like to hear from you.
Please send us your resume and a brief description of your drafting and fabrication experience. Examples or a portfolio of previous SolidWorks, sheet-metal or fabrication projects would be appreciated if available.
Pay: $20.08-$38.87 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
