Position Summary:
The Tahatikonhsotontie Head Start Educator is directly responsible to the Tahatikonhsotontie Head Start Program Manager. The Educator must be able to work with preschoolers and their parents on a one-on-one basis as well as in a group. The Educator must provide services in a positive, open-minded atmosphere which encompasses the “whole child”. This person must be interested in learning Mohawk Language and Culture and using it within the programs with children and families.
Reporting:
This position will report to the Tahatikonhsotontie Head Start Program Manager.
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
Planning and implementing age-appropriate learning activities
Assessing children’s progress and needs, making recommendations to parents
Assisting children in their learning and appreciation of their personal care and self-help needs
Understanding of all learning styles in order to engage children, parents, families, volunteers and staff
Supporting child directed, open ended learning
Acting as a positive and holistic role-model for parents, care givers and children
Assisting with transportation of children when required
Requirements:
Post-Secondary Diploma in Early Childhood Education;
Registered or is eligible to be registered with the College of Early Childhood Educators;
Minimum two years’ relevant experience; or
Diploma in a related field (i.e. SSW, DSW) with four years’ experience working with children and families in a childcare setting; or
A combination of Education, Experience and Training may be considered
Experience in a First Nations setting preferred
Must provide a clear CPIC and VSC (documentation will be required if successful applicant)
First Aid and CPR an asset (and must be willing to take the training if hired)
Valid Driver’s License and vehicle
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the Ministry of Education “How Does Learning Happen” and child directed learning
Experience with computer programs (i.e. Microsoft Office, email and internet
Knowledge of the Child Care Early Years Act is an asset
Passionate about working with children
Ability to work as an individual and as part of a team
Well developed interpersonal, public relations and relationship building skills
Excellent organizational, time and file manaement skills
Ability to multi-task and prioritize demands
Specialty training in relevant areas (i.e. grief recovery, parenting, child development, special needs, etc.) are preferred
Experience in a setting which incorporates Mohawk Language and Culture preferred
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Knowledge of legislation and government agencies an asset
