Reporting to the Clinical Manager and at times working in collaboration with a Clinician, the Child and Youth Worker provides professional child and youth work services in homes, schools, community, to individual children, adolescents, parents/caregivers, families and groups in which the child is experiencing social, emotional and/or behavioural problems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Observe and record the behaviour of children and their caretakers in home, school and community settings to help inform the clinical treatment plan, elements of which may be implemented by the Child and Youth Worker.
- Work independently or in collaboration with the Clinician or Psychology Service, establish strategies to meet behavioural management needs either on an individual basis or in conjunction with parents, teachers or other service providers. These strategies will focus on safety and security, life and social skills development and will meet Compass’ requirements on evidence based intervention and best practices.
- Facilitate evidence informed group intervention and provide psychoeducation as appropriate, including program consultations, client intake/assessment for service, progress notes and closing summaries.
- Deliver life and social skills training and coaching to children, youth and caregivers in community, school and office settings.
- Implement and evaluate these programs and to report back to the Clinical Manager
- Record pertinent data in client files as per Compass policy.
- Recommend to the Clinical Manager ways to improve service delivery.
- Participate as a member of the Compass’ multi-disciplinary team.
- When able, mentor Child and Youth Worker students on placement.
- Provide information and skill development to parents/caregivers and community groups related to child and youth issues.
- Participate and contribute at Interdisciplinary Team meetings, Case Reviews and Communities of Practice.
- Contribute to the improvement of clinical policies, procedures and practices.
- Participate in Compass sponsored research, as directed.
- Attend conferences, seminars and workshops when possible. Read current journals and other literature related to the field.
- Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of child development and behaviour in the context of home, school and community services.
- A working knowledge of the spectrum of services available to children in catchment area.
- A working knowledge of Applied Behavioural Analysis principles.
- A basic awareness of family dynamics and intervention models.
- Knowledge and appreciation of issues facing our diverse populations (i.e. Anishinabek cultures, Francophone, Immigrant/Refugee, LGBT2SQ, etc.).
- Understanding the impact of the social determinants of health on our clients mental and developmental outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successful completion of a Child & Youth Care or Child and Youth Worker College Diploma with 2 years’ experience with children.
- Valid First Aid/CPR will be required.
- CPI will be required.
