Full job description

Summary

This position is responsible for the daily operations of the store while leading the strategic growth of our new lumber yard and contractor sales division. The General Manager will build the division from the ground up – developing contractor relationships, expanding lumber and building materials volume, and growing a dedicated contractor sales team – while continuing to oversee staff management and supervision, customer and contractor service, sales targets, product presentation, inventory management, and seasonal changeover and promotional activities across the store.

Growth Mandate: Lumber Yard & Contractor Sales Division

This is a growth-focused mandate. The successful candidate will be a driving force behind establishing the lumber yard and contractor sales division as a core profit centre for the store, with direct accountability for building the division's customer base, sales volume, and team from an early stage.

Develop and execute a growth strategy for the lumber yard and contractor sales division, including volume, margin, and market share targets;
Prospect, build, and maintain relationships with local contractors, builders, renovators, and trade professionals to grow a loyal commercial customer base;
Recruit, train, and lead a dedicated contractor sales team, including outside sales representatives and yard staff;
Establish competitive, profitable pricing, quoting, and account structures (e.g. trade accounts, volume pricing, credit terms) for contractor customers;
Build supplier and vendor relationships to secure competitive lumber and building materials pricing, product availability, and delivery reliability;
Oversee lumber yard operations, layout, and safety standards, including receiving, storage, and handling of dimensional lumber, panel products, and bulk building materials;
Coordinate and grow the delivery and job-site service offering in support of contractor sales;
Monitor local construction and renovation market activity to identify new business opportunities and competitive threats;
Track and report on division performance (sales, margin, new accounts, quote conversion) against growth targets;
Represent the store at industry, trade, and builder-association events to build brand presence in the contractor community.

Core Competencies

Minimum of 5 years work experience in the retail industry;
Minimum of 2 years work experience in a management role;
Lumber, building materials, and contractor/trade sales experience strongly preferred;
Demonstrated success growing a sales channel, division, or new business line;
Proven customer and contractor relationship-building and business development skills;
Demonstrated ability to train and motivate staff;
Effective communicator and team builder;
Able to plan, organize, and delegate work effectively and ensure its completion;
Strong problem-solving skills;
Dependable and adaptable; ability to manage multiple projects;
Positive, entrepreneurial attitude;
Knowledge of point-of-sale and quoting/estimating systems an asset;
Alignment with the culture and values of our company.

Job Responsibilities

Lumber Yard & Contractor Sales Growth

Lead the build-out and ongoing growth of the lumber yard and contractor sales division;
Develop new contractor and builder accounts and grow existing account volume;
Ordering and managing lumber and building materials product to support growth and demand forecasts;
Set and manage contractor sales targets, pricing strategy, and account terms;
Coach and develop the contractor sales team on prospecting, quoting, and account management;
Build supplier relationships to support product availability and competitive lumber pricing;
Coordinate delivery, job-site drop-off, and related service logistics for contractor customers.

Store & Team Operations

Manage multiple teams: retail sales, contractor sales, installed sales, and delivery;
Ordering retail product;
Regular cycle counts and hole maintenance;
Planning promotions, executing national events, and weekly flyer set-up;
Resolving staff, customer, and contractor issues;
Promotions – seasonally relevant on a weekly basis;
Loss prevention: training, awareness, and regular discussions with staff;
Updating price changes and label accuracy;
Health & Safety committee and WSIB claims;
HR planning, staffing levels, and employee morale;
Scheduling: creating schedules, daily approval of hours, and working within hour budgets;
Ensuring store and yard cleanliness standards are met;
Other related responsibilities as directed by supervisor.

Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
