About the Role
Lifemark Health Group is seeking an experienced Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner (OHNP) to join our growing occupational health team. This advanced practice role delivers clinical care and occupational health medical services that support worker health, safety, and fitness for work across clinic, onsite, and mobile environments.
The OHNP functions in a role comparable to an occupational health physician for appropriately delegated or independently authorized activities within provincial legislation, NP scope of practice, organizational policies, client requirements, and approved clinical protocols. The role combines autonomous clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, work ability evaluation, medical surveillance oversight, and interdisciplinary consultation.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct comprehensive health assessments using strong clinical judgment, diagnostic reasoning, and therapeutic expertise.

Provide timely triage, assessment, and management of acute injuries and illnesses, with a focus on musculoskeletal conditions.

Develop, implement, and adjust individualized treatment plans to support recovery, functional outcomes, and return-to-work goals.

Practice independently within the full scope of Nurse Practitioner practice, maintaining accountability for all clinical decisions and actions.

Prescribe, adjust, and manage medications, and order/interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., lab work, imaging) in accordance with Nova Scotia regulatory standards.

Collaborate and consult with physicians and other healthcare professionals as needed to support patient care.

Provide medical recommendations, including functional abilities and workplace limitations, in alignment with best practices.

Support return-to-work planning through collaboration with employers, insurers, and rehabilitation teams.

Promote health and prevent illness through education, counseling, and evidence-based interventions.

Support the management of patients with stable chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, asthma).

Refer patients to appropriate healthcare providers, specialists, or community programs based on clinical needs.

Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards.

Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and contribute to coordinated, patient-centered care.

Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with professional and organizational standards.

Support virtual care delivery where appropriate, including telehealth assessments and follow-ups.

Engage in ongoing professional development and support mentorship of students or new team members as appropriate.
Qualifications
- Current registration and good standing as a Nurse Practitioner with the applicable provincial regulator.
- Graduate degree in nursing and successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program.
- Typically, 2+ years of relevant clinical experience; direct occupational health, urgent/primary care, emergency, disability management, public health, or industrial health experience is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in assessment, diagnostic reasoning, management planning, and clinical documentation.
- Strong understanding of occupational risk assessment, fitness-to-work, functional capability, job demands analysis, restrictions/limitations, accommodations, privacy/confidentiality, and documentation standards in employer-funded services.
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation where travel to worksites is required.
Preferred Assets
- Experience performing or overseeing safety-sensitive medicals, periodic medicals, surveillance testing, or private/public-sector occupational health evaluations.
- Experience with disability case management, return-to-work coordination, and interpretation of job demands or functional limitations.
- Competency or certification in occupational testing such as audiometry, spirometry, respirator fit testing, immunization, TB testing, ECG, phlebotomy/specimen collection, and drug and alcohol testing.
- Experience in transportation, aviation, marine, law enforcement, mining, manufacturing, public safety, public service, construction, or remote/industrial sectors.
