We are seeking a Senior Environmental Inspector to lead environmental compliance and monitoring activities on active construction and mining projects. The successful candidate will conduct inspections, interpret regulatory and permit requirements, and support implementation of environmental mitigation measures in accordance with Environmental Assessment (EA) Certificate conditions, permits, and environmental management plans. This position requires a strong field presence, sound professional judgment, and experience working with contractors and multidisciplinary project teams in dynamic field environments.
Primary Duties
Environmental Compliance & Inspection
- Lead environmental inspections and monitoring within active construction and mine environments,
- Interpret and verify compliance with federal and provincial environmental legislation, permits, and project-specific commitments,
- Oversee implementation of Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), EA Certificate conditions, and M11 permit requirements, and
- Review, document, and communicate inspection findings, including recommendations for corrective action and follow-up.
Construction Environmental Monitoring
- Work safely in and around heavy equipment operations with awareness of equipment hazards, blind spots, and communication protocols,
- Interpret environmental and survey flagging to confirm protection of sensitive environmental features and approved disturbance limits, and
- Assess environmental risks associated with ongoing construction activities and recommend mitigation measures, and
- Provide technical guidance and support to field staff and project teams on environmental compliance matters.
Soil, Vegetation & Reclamation
- Oversee soil salvage, handling, and stockpiling activities in accordance with approved soil management plans,
- Lead reclamation and erosion monitoring inspections, and
- Verify installation and effectiveness of erosion and sediment control (ESC) measures.
Water & Environmental Protection
- Oversee water quality protection measures near watercourses and environmentally sensitive areas,
- Monitor dust suppression and air quality control practices,
- Identify spill risks and verify containment and response preparedness, and
- Confirm proper waste segregation, storage, and disposal practices.
Wildlife & Habitat Protection
- Monitor construction activities for potential wildlife and habitat impacts, and
- Ensure implementation of wildlife management plans and mitigation measures.
Contractor Coordination & Communication
- Liaise and provide direction with contractors and site personnel regarding environmental requirements and best management practices,
- Review contractor documentation and scopes of work for environmental compliance considerations,
- Communicate compliance risks and inspection results clearly to project teams and recommend corrective actions where required, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned.
Experience and Requirements
- Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Agrology, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline,
- Professional designation in good standing is required (e.g., P.Ag., R.P.Bio., AScT),
- 7+ years of experience in environmental monitoring or inspection within construction, mining, forestry, or infrastructure projects,
- Strong working knowledge of British Columbia environmental legislation and permitting processes.
- Experience conducting field inspections and environmental compliance monitoring,
- Experience interpreting and applying Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), permit conditions, and environmental mitigation measures,
- Experience working on projects regulated under Environmental Assessment Certificates considered an asset, and
- Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities or stewardship organizations considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong observational and field assessment skills,
- Knowledge of soil salvage, reclamation, erosion and sediment control (ESC) practices, and environmental best management practices,
- Effective verbal and written communication skills when working with contractors, consultants, and technical teams,
- Ability to interpret environmental management plans, permits, and technical drawings,
- Ability to work independently in remote and field-based environments,
- Strong organizational, documentation, and reporting skills, and
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities, including proactive risk identification, mitigation, and corrective action recommendations.
Work Environment
- Schedule: The position operates on a rotational shift schedule, which may include 14 days on followed by 14 days off, or 10 days on followed by 12 days off, as operationally required. Scheduled workdays consist of 10-hour shifts, exclusive of travel time to and from the work site. Travel time requirements will be communicated in advance and may vary depending on project location.
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x.
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the K’en T’em office at 2045 Trans Canada Hwy W, Kamloops, BC, or 1355 Nicola Ave, Merritt, BC (whichever is closer to the successful candidates residence), with the expectation of field work as needed,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
