As a Spiritual Health Practitioner (SHP), you will play a vital role in supporting the emotional, spiritual, and existential wellbeing of patients, families, and staff—helping them navigate some of life’s most complex and vulnerable moments.
Working as part of an interdisciplinary care team, you will provide compassionate, person-centred care that honours each individual’s beliefs, values, and lived experience. Your work will directly support KHSC’s commitment to patient- and family-centred care and contribute to a culture of empathy, respect, and holistic healing across the organization.
Clinical Care & Patient Support
- Provide psychosocial-spiritual assessments and interventions for patients and families experiencing illness, trauma, grief, or end-of-life care
- Develop and support individualized spiritual health care plans aligned with patient values and goals
- Offer therapeutic support using trauma-informed and evidence-based approaches
- Facilitate conversations around meaning, values, decision-making, and end-of-life care
- Lead or support group and individual sessions in inpatient and outpatient settings
- Document clinical interactions and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support holistic care
Staff & Team Support
- Support staff and learners experiencing moral distress, compassion fatigue, or challenging clinical situations
- Participate in debriefs following critical incidents or emotionally complex events
Education & Knowledge Sharing
- Deliver formal and informal education to healthcare professionals, learners, and community members
- Contribute to professional development initiatives, rounds, and knowledge-sharing forums
Collaboration & Organizational Initiatives
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, consultations, and care planning
- Contribute to quality improvement, program development, and departmental initiatives
- Build connections with community partners, including spiritual care providers and external organizations
Education & Professional Credentials
- Master’s degree in Theology, Psycho-Spiritual Therapy, Spiritual Care, or a related field
- Certification with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC)
- Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of recent clinical experience providing psycho-spiritual, counselling, or therapeutic support
- Experience supporting individuals and families through crisis, trauma, grief, or end-of-life care
- Experience working within healthcare, mental health, hospice, or community-based environments
Skills & Expertise
- Strong psycho-spiritual assessment and intervention skills
- Trauma-informed counselling and crisis intervention expertise
- Knowledge of spiritual, mental, and psychosocial health practices
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
- Ability to navigate complex, emotionally sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy
- Strong clinical documentation and organizational skills
- Commitment to culturally safe, inclusive, and person-centred care
