Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Project Estimator with strong fabrication, engineering, and project evaluation experience. This person will be responsible for preparing accurate, competitive quotations for custom-fabricated steel, stainless steel, and aluminum projects. The ideal candidate can quickly interpret RFQs, concept models, and structural specifications to determine material, labor, subcontractor, and engineering costs.
This role requires a combination of technical understanding, manufacturing process knowledge, cost analysis skills, and the ability to coordinate with external engineering firms and installation subcontractors. The Estimator must be able to read between the lines of project requirements, identify scope gaps, and ensure our proposals are complete, accurate, and competitive.
Responsibilities
- Review RFQs including concept models, customer drawings, structural requirements and steel weights.
- Develop accurate project estimates using pricing standards such as $/sq ft, $/linear ft, $/lb, or custom breakdowns depending on project type.
- Estimate material quantities and cost across carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and other industrial materials.
- Prepare labour estimates based on detailed understanding of all plant operations (laser cutting, waterjet, tube laser, CNC machining 3-axis/5-axis, lathe, forming, fabrication, welding, mechanical, assembly, electrical assembly).
- Analyse manufacturability, production flow, and operation times to estimate realistic labour hours.
- Clearly identify inclusions, exclusions, assumptions, and risks in proposals.
- Work directly with outside engineering firms to obtain proposals for design, stamping, structural review, or other required scopes.
- Incorporate engineering costs into formal estimates and proposals.
- Ensure engineering deliverables align with customer requirements and shop capabilities.
- Source and coordinate pricing for subcontracted services such as on-site installation, specialty fabrication, and coatings, finishes, or other outsourced processes
- Obtain competitive quotes and evaluate suppliers based on cost, capability, lead time, and quality.
- Maintain a network of reliable vendors and subcontractors.
- Compile complete cost proposals including material, labour, engineering, subcontract work, overhead, and markup.
- Prepare customer-ready quotation packages with clear scope definitions.
- Review contract documents, specifications, and terms to identify commercial or technical risks.
- Collaborate with sales and operations to ensure proposals are aligned with capacity, lead times, and manufacturing capabilities.
- Develop and maintain internal pricing databases (material guidelines, labour standards, benchmarks, $/lb and $/sq ft cost models).
- Support the improvement of estimating templates, tools, and workflows.
- Provide feedback to operations to refine labour assumptions and process times.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes, including laser cutting, waterjet, forming, welding, machining, and assembly.
- Experience estimating steel, stainless steel, and aluminium projects with an understanding of different fabrication complexities.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, 3D models, RFQs, specifications, and structural documents.
- Proficiency with CAD or model viewers (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.) – ability to extract dimensions and understand geometry.
- Strong analytical skills to create accurate labour and material estimates.
- Experience working with and coordinating outside engineering firms.
- Ability to gather and negotiate supplier quotes for materials, installation, and outsourced processes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing customer proposals.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify scope gaps or risks in project documents.
- Engineering background (Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial) is a strong asset.
- Experience with ERP or estimating software.
- Knowledge of contract review and commercial terms.
- Familiarity with industry codes such as AWS, AISC, ASME, or similar.
Join us as a Project Estimator where your expertise will directly influence the success of our projects! We value energetic professionals eager to contribute their skills in a fast-paced environment dedicated to excellence in construction estimation.
