GENERAL SUMMARY
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist is the lead EHS professional responsible for the development, execution, and continuous improvement of DeZURIK's EHS programs across operations in Cambridge, Ontario, Leduc, Alberta, and Redmond, Washington. Based in Cambridge, this highly engaged role partners closely with operations leaders, supervisors, and employees to foster a safe, compliant, and high-performing workplace. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being on the shop floor, solving problems in real time, coaching employees, and translating EHS requirements into practical actions that drive meaningful results. Supporting three small to mid-sized facilities, the role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact by strengthening safety culture, reducing risk, enhancing compliance, and building trust throughout the organization. The successful candidate is a self-starter who takes ownership, identifies opportunities, implements practical solutions, and drives positive change through collaboration, influence, and partnership.
This role is 100% on site, with no hybrid options.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
· Spend most of the time on the manufacturing floor engaging employees and supervisors to support a safe, compliant work environment.
· Conduct routine safety inspections and identify opportunities for immediate corrective action.
· Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; determine root causes and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
· Coach supervisors and employees on safe work practices, hazard recognition, and regulatory compliance requirements.
· Develop and maintain practical Safe Work Instructions in collaboration with production employees and supervisors.
· Deliver new employee orientation and ongoing EHS training programs.
· Support ergonomic assessments and recommend practical workplace improvements to reduce risk and improve employee well-being.
· Coordinate Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) activities and ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
· Manage Workers' Compensation documentation and support return-to-work programs in partnership with Human Resources.
· Maintain OSHA, OHSA, WCB, and environmental compliance documentation and records.
· Support environmental reporting activities and permit compliance requirements.
· Coordinate and support internal and external audits and ensure timely completion of corrective actions.
· Drive safety culture initiatives through Kaizen events, engagement activities, videos, leading KPI programs, and communication campaigns.
· Track, analyze, and communicate EHS performance metrics and trends to leadership.
· Travel regularly between Cambridge, Leduc, and Redmond to maintain a visible EHS presence and support site operation.
· Champion Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) initiatives through coaching, engagement, and positive reinforcement.
· Build trust and credibility with employees through a visible, approachable, and supportive presence on the shop floor.
· Identify continuous improvement opportunities and implement practical solutions to enhance safety, compliance, and operational performance.
· Develop, implement, and continuously improve site EHS programs, policies, and procedures.
· Monitor regulatory changes and ensure ongoing compliance with applicable federal, provincial, state, and local requirements.
· Establish annual EHS objectives and lead initiatives to achieve safety and environmental performance goals.
· Partner with operations leadership to integrate EHS expectations into daily operations and continuous improvement activities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, or related degree or a combination of experience and education that is equivalent.
· Minimum 5 years of Environmental Health & Safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
· Experience with and understanding safety operations in a metal manufacturing organization (safe operation of numerous lifting devices at minimum).
Preferred:
· Experience in a lean manufacturing environment.
· Experience with Canada OHS (Ontario OHSA and Alberta OHS preferred) and USA OSHA (Washington WISHA preferred) safety legislation.
· Certified Safety Professional (CSP) desired.
· Experience with musculoskeletal/ergonomic.
· Experience with problem solving skills A3’s.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· Physical demands are typical of an office position, including extended periods of sitting, and extensive use of a personal computer and telephone.
· Must be able to see and move throughout the plant to resolve work problems and facilitate processes.
· Occasional handling of material and components.
· May have contact with caustic substances in some areas of the plant.
· Must be able to tolerate long hours in a shop environment and support after-hours business needs as they arise.
· Travel for the company, including both domestic and international travel required up to 30% of time.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Manufacturing and office environment. When working in shop areas, personal protection equipment (PPE) will be recommended and/or required (safety shoes, safety glasses w/side shields, hearing protection, face shield, gloves, apron and boots). Must have the ability to support extended business hours to meet customer business needs.

DeZURIK offers a competitive base salary in the $53.06 to 66.33 CAD range based on experience and qualifications, along with annual bonus opportunities tied to performance.
