About the Dr. Peter Centre

The Dr. Peter Centre (DPC) provides compassionate HIV care for people living with significant health issues including mental illness, trauma, substance use, unstable housing and poverty.

Through its day health, 24-hour care residence and enhanced supportive housing programs, the DPC provides healthy meals, counselling, therapies, nursing, and a safe place for peer socialization and support. Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Day Health Coordinator, the Music Therapist, as a member of a multidisciplinary team, is responsible for providing therapeutic activities for individuals and groups using music as a medium and therapy modality.

Key Responsibilities

The Music Therapist is responsible for the following:

Conducting discipline-based assessments of individual and group needs and planning for relevant therapeutic interventions;
Providing individual and group activities/therapeutic interventions;
Assists in the orientation of new program participants;
Participating as an active member of the clinical team including supporting general program activities and environment monitoring as assigned;
Collaborate with other team members and external health and social providers in developing plans;
Documenting significant interventions and contacts;
Maintaining music supplies and equipment;
Supervising music students and volunteers in the music therapy service; and
Performing other related duties in Day Health and Residence departments as assigned.

Education, Qualifications and Experience

The preferred education, qualifications and experience of the Music Therapist are:

Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Music Therapy or equivalent;
Two years’ experience as a Music Therapist;
Ability to facilitate Music Therapy group sessions as well as one on one interventions;
Ability to assess, report and document as required;
Ability to keep inventory of the equipment and supplies belonging to the Music therapy area; and
Ability to supervise volunteers and students within Music Therapy settings.
Understanding of challenges experienced by individuals living with HIV and significant health and social issues, including homelessness, mental illness, trauma, substance use, poverty and social isolation;
Skills in conflict resolution, behavior management and restorative justice;
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the team;
Strong oral and written communication skills; and

General Working Conditions

This is a casual position with an hourly pay rate range of $37.89- $47.31. This position requires flexibility and the ability to prioritize workload, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment where demands and deadlines may change with short notice. Multitasking and flexibility are a must in order to meet deadlines, and to support many operational functions/activities that may occur concurrently or without notice. An understanding of the importance of maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive employee/client information is necessary.
