Compaction Operator Job Description

Job Summary

The Compaction Operator is responsible for operating compaction equipment such as rollers to compress soil, gravel, and other aggregate materials during water and sewer construction projects. This role is essential for ensuring proper compaction of backfill materials after the installation of water and sewer lines, supporting the integrity and longevity of underground utilities and preventing future settlement issues.

Key Responsibilities

Operate various types of compaction equipment including smooth drum rollers, padfoot rollers, and jumping jacks, to achieve required soil density and stability.
Compact soil and gravel to required specifications, especially following water and sewer line installation.
Perform pre-operational checks, daily equipment inspections, and routine maintenance, report equipment issues or defects promptly.
Work closely with site supervisors, crew members, and other equipment operators to coordinate compaction activities and maintain clear communication.
Communicate with density testers to monitor compaction quality and adjust techniques as needed; report results to supervisors.
Follow safety protocols, company policies, and site-specific procedures.
Always ensure proper use of PPE.
Maintain situational awareness of surroundings, including personnel, equipment, and environmental conditions.
Use radios or hand signals to communicate with ground personnel and spotters.
Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, or near-miss incidents immediately.
Complete required documentation such as equipment logs, inspection checklists, timesheets, and safety compliance records.
Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
Assist with site preparation and cleanup as required.

Reporting Responsibilities

Report to the Foreman (Site Supervisor).
Complete daily equipment inspections and submit reports through SiteDocs.
Communicate equipment issues, safety hazards, and other concerns.
Review and sign off on all daily tailgate meeting minutes and weekly toolbox talks using SiteDocs
Report any incidents, injuries, near misses, hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to Foreman (Site Supervisor)
Complete and submit incident reports, near-miss documentation,

Qualifications

Valid operator certification or equivalent training (if required).
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge of ground disturbance safe work procedures and practices, soil types, and any other safe work procedures and practices related to the work being performed
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical ability to perform tasks in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Frequent sitting and operating machinery for extended periods.
Manual dexterity to control levers and foot pedals.
Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical labor as needed.
Walking, standing, bending, and climbing on uneven terrain.
Exposure to vibration, noise, and outdoor elements.
Climb in and out of equipment safely and frequently.

Work Environment

Work performed outdoors on active construction sites, including water and sewer installation and rehabilitation projects.
Exposure to dust, noise, mud, heavy equipment, and varying weather conditions.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety boots, and high-visibility clothing.
Typical work hours are 8–12 hour shifts with potential for overtime, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, as required by project schedules.
