Position Title: Executive Director
Hours & Work Arrangement: We value flexibility, balance, and strong community presence. Our office serves the public Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. However, the Executive Director role allows flexibility in scheduling to support both organizational needs and community engagement. Hybrid work arrangements may be considered, with the understanding that this role includes regular in-office leadership, relationship-building across the region, board meetings, fundraising activities, and occasional evening or weekend commitments.
Salary: $70,000 - $80,000/year, depending on experience and qualifications

The United Way of Lethbridge & South Western Alberta is dedicated to improving lives and strengthening communities across our region. We provide funding and support to local organizations working to address important community needs and improve the quality of life for people throughout the area. We are currently seeking an experienced and relationship-focused Executive Director to lead the organization and help guide its continued success. This position works closely with the Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Responsibilities include hiring and overseeing staff, leading fundraising efforts, building and maintaining community relationships, overseeing day-to-day operations, and advancing United Way's mission throughout the region.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with people, supporting important causes, and bringing organizations and communities together. The position requires strong leadership, excellent judgment, and the ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with donors, volunteers, community partners, funded organizations, and other important stakeholders. The Executive Director must be comfortable balancing long-term planning with the day-to-day responsibilities of leading a community-focused organization.

What You’ll Do:
Organizational Leadership & Board Support
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to support strategic planning, organizational priorities, and long-term sustainability
- Provide regular reports, recommendations, and information to support Board decision-making and organizational planning activities
- Support Board and committee work by attending meetings and preparing reports, policies, and other materials as required
- Identify and communicate important opportunities, risks, community needs, and organizational issues that may impact the United Way and its work
- Lead the day-to-day operations and ensure activities align with organizational priorities and Board direction
Fundraising, Campaigns & Community Investment
- Lead United Way's annual campaigns, fundraising events, grant applications, sponsorship opportunities, and donor engagement activities
- Support campaign volunteers and volunteer-led committees in the planning and delivery of fundraising initiatives
- Oversee community investment and allocations processes, including funding provided to partner agencies and community organizations
- Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, funders, businesses, governments, and community partners
- Ensure funding agreements, reporting requirements, designated donations, and donor stewardship activities are managed effectively
Financial & Operational Accountability
- Lead annual budget development and oversee financial planning, reporting, audits, and organizational sustainability
- Ensure appropriate financial controls, accountability measures, policies, and procedures are in place and followed
- Oversee bookkeeping, payroll, benefits administration, insurance, contracts, and other operational requirements
- Ensure compliance with charitable, financial, privacy, and regulatory requirements
People & Volunteer Leadership
- Recruit, support, develop, and evaluate staff while promoting a positive and collaborative work environment
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to staff and volunteers
- Support volunteer recruitment, training, engagement, and recognition activities
- Ensure staff and volunteers have the resources and support needed to achieve organizational goals
Community Relations, Communications & Advocacy
- Act as a visible ambassador and spokesperson for United Way throughout the region
- Represent the organization at relevant community events, committees, networks, and collaborative initiatives
- Build strong, effective relationships with partner agencies, local governments, community organizations, businesses, media, and other United Way organizations
- Oversee marketing, communications, public relations, and brand stewardship activities
- Engage donors, volunteers, community partners, and the broader community in supporting United Way's mission and impact throughout the region
What We’re Looking For:
- Leadership experience within a non-profit, charitable, community development, public sector, or related environment
- Post-secondary education in business, nonprofit management, public administration, communications, social sciences, or a related field
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor engagement, sponsorship development, grant funding, or resource development
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills
- Experience working with a variety of groups, including volunteers, donors, funders, businesses, community organizations, and community partners
- Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors
- Demonstrated financial management and budgeting experience, including financial reporting and oversight
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including listening to understand, public speaking, report writing, and presenting recommendations
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to analyze information, develop realistic solutions, and advise the Board on best practices
- Experience recruiting, supporting, and supervising staff, volunteers, and external contractors
- Ability to balance long-term planning and strategic thinking with day-to-day operational leadership
- Proven organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities
- Knowledge of the non-profit, charitable, or social service sector is considered an asset
- This role requires occasional travel within Lethbridge and throughout South Western Alberta for meetings, community events, donor relations, and organizational activities. Candidates must have access to reliable transportation and be able to travel as required
