Full job description

We are seeking qualified, experienced Biologists (or related professionals) to join our Wildlife Sweeps team. The position is on a fly-in/fly-out schedule with camp and flights provided at Suncor Fort Hills.

Our team performs wildlife sweeps of various oil sands construction zones, looking for and documenting both active and inactive wildlife features. This position works mainly outdoors in all weather conditions and is very physically demanding.

The role is also responsible for:

Conduct wildlife sweeps in remote, rugged norther terrain.
Identify wildlife specific habitats and wildlife.
Compile, manage, and interpret data, and draft sections of technical or regulatory reports.
Understand and interpret provincial and federal wildlife legislation.
Install and maintain recording units (ARU’s) and remote wildlife cameras.
Assist with site or government permit applications and reviews.
Safely operate 4x4 trucks (1/2 ton) around the mine site in rough, off-road conditions.
Comply with all mine site rules and regulations, including cell phone and substance testing policies.

Qualifications:

A degree in biological sciences and previous wildlife sweeping experience. A related professional designation would be a definite asset.
Experience in breeding bird surveys, wildlife sweeps and wildlife surveys and sharp-tailed grouse lek surveys, with a varied knowledge of Canadian wildlife and industry standards.
Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the preparation of wildlife management plans, reports, and proposals; specific to project needs.
Solid working knowledge of provincial and federal wildlife legislation and regulatory requirements, primarily in western Canada.
Familiarity with environmental compliance and industry best management practices and mitigation measures related to construction projects.
A valid class 5 driver’s license and the ability to read, write, and communicate in English are both required to work at our client sites.
