Full job description

Location: Linden, Alberta, Canada

Reporting to the Shop Foreman with day-to-day supervision and delegation of work by the Shop Supervisor and Team Leader, participate in the efficient and effective operations of the Production Facility by providing machinist services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

General

Study specifications, charts, drawings or sample parts to determine the machining operation to be performed.
Read, interpret and edit a variety of G-code programs.
Use a variety of lifting equipment (e.g., crane, dollies) to move material as required.
Measure and mark dimensions and reference points for future machining steps.
Calculate dimensions and tolerances and prepare working sketches if necessary.
Inspect pieces throughout run to ensure tolerances and quality.
Properly use measuring tools.
Measure and mark metal and other materials.
Set up the conventional or CNC machines for the Operator to run the machine.
Fit parts to mechanisms and verify dimensions.
Conduct “first-off” inspection as well as in-process inspections.
Perform minor problem solving and provide help to another Machinist or Operator.
Provide training / support to Operators, Apprentices and other new Machinists as part of their orientation.
Conduct daily preventive maintenance checks on machines / equipment, tools and parts.
Inspect cutting tools.
Maintain a clean work station.
Follow all required Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures including WHMIS procedures and the wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses, steel toed boots).
Adhere to quality procedures and work instructions, and actively participate in the quality improvement process; maintain and complete proper Quality documentation and reports.
Appropriately, and in a timely manner complete administrative tasks including timesheets, job sheets, etc.
Relate to and communicate with co-workers and management sincerely, clearly, tactfully, promptly and courteously; respond to inquiries and complaints promptly and professionally.
Perform tasks consistent with the position, as may be required on an ad hoc basis.

Competencies:

Attendance & Punctuality: Dependability and reliability; demonstration of regular and punctual attendance
Communications: Interaction with Production, Shipping/Receiving, and QC.
Quality: Have a good understanding of a documented system, and knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality System.
Safety & Security: Is highly safety conscious, and wear appropriate PPE such as steel toed shoes and safety glasses in designated areas.
OHSA Act Section 3 (2) Every worker shall, while engaged in an occupation, take reasonable care to protect the health and safety of the worker and of other workers present while the worker is working, and co-operate with the worker’s employer for the purposes of protecting the health and safety of the worker, other workers engaged in the work of the employer, and other workers not engaged in the work of that employer but present at the work site at which that work is being carried out.

Qualifications / Requirements:

Alberta-certified journeyperson in Machining, or a recognized trade certificate, or has the skills and knowledge expected of a certified journeyperson
Read and interpret blueprints / drawings
Minimum 5 years’ experience on conventional or CNC machines
Knowledge / experience with Gibbs Cam / Master Cam software
Familiarity with a variety of precision measuring tools
Ability to use a variety of lifting equipment (e.g., forklift, crane, dolly)
Strong attention to detail and ability to conform to quality standards
Effective interpersonal and communication skills
Computer literate
Strong team player with a high level of initiative and integrity
Effective problem-solving skills
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work within tight deadlines
Physical strength and stamina Alberta-certified journeyperson in Machining, or a recognized trade certificate, or has the skills and knowledge expected of a certified journeyperson

Computer Skills: Strong computer skills required, must be able to utilize E2 shop software to maintain job logs and efficiencies.

Certificates and Licenses:

Journeyperson in Machining or recognized trade certificate
Forklift would be an asset

Work Environment:

Primarily indoor industrial work setting with moderate noise levels
Overtime may be required

Physical Demands:

Must be able to perform repetitive lifting and bending
Possess ability to sit and stand, including frequent walking, bending and twisting at the waist and knees, squatting or kneeling
Routinely heavy lifting required
