About Us

The Human Environments Analysis Laboratory (HEAL) at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada invites applications for Summer Student appointments, who are enrolled in an Ontario Secondary School to support research related to social and environmental determinants of child and youth health. The HEAL is a unique inter-disciplinary research and training environment which develops and connects highly skilled researchers to create, disseminate, and mobilize knowledge for making healthy, thriving communities.

Responsibilities

The Summer Student will contribute to research activities involving data collection, management, analysis, knowledge mobilization, and project coordination, with a particular emphasis on community-based research, social and environmental determinants, and child/youth health and wellbeing through:

Demonstrate a self-starting independent work ethic and positive outlook towards learning new knowledge and skills
Illustrate a strong connection between their current educational and lived experiences to the performance of their responsibilities in this role
Support graduate students, postdoctoral associates, staff, and faculty in tasks associated with HEAL research projects
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve lab goals
Perform general administrative and technical support tasks, as needed
Contribute to a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork, and complies with all applicable health and safety, and regulatory requirement

Qualifications
Education:

Current Ontario secondary school student (grade 10-12)

Experience:

Prior experience in a volunteer, community, school, or paid role that involved organizing information, supporting others, or working as part of a team
Experience using computers for school or personal projects, including familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, etc.)
Any exposure to research, data collection, or science-related coursework or extracurriculars (e.g., science fair, geography projects, health class)
Experience working or volunteering in a community, healthcare, or educational setting is

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

Experience working with research data, including data cleaning and organization
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
