The Organization
Coast Mental Health Foundation (the Foundation) raises funds to support innovative and enhanced recovery programs at Coast Mental Health.
Coast Mental Health (Coast) is one of the largest mental health non-profit societies in Canada and operates a large array of innovative housing and community-based rehabilitation services for people with mental illness. Coast operates in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia providing approximately 1,100 people with supportive housing and thousands of clients living in the community with a wide range of mental health and support programs and services.
Coast fosters a client-driven, recovery-oriented environment that promotes restoring health, personal growth, and a return to society for individuals with a mental illness, through advocacy and providing direct programs and services.
The Foundation team is a group of dedicated individuals who believe that recovery and achieving one’s potential, despite a mental illness diagnosis, are possible. The Foundation and Coast are currently considering embarking on a significant project aimed at increasing the organizations’ ability to impact the lives of people living with mental illness.
Summary of Responsibilities
The Senior Manager, Marketing and Strategic Communications is responsible for developing, leading, and managing all brand, marketing and strategic communications activities for Coast Mental Health Foundation (CMHF), the fundraising arm of Coast Mental Health.
The Senior Manager, Marketing and Strategic Communications develops and delivers integrated strategies that strengthen the Foundation’s profile, advance fundraising priorities and support revenue growth from new and existing sources.
The Senior Manager leads the Foundation’s marketing and communications function, supports staff and oversees consultants, and works closely with Coast Foundation (Coast Mental Health), Coast Social Enterprises, and key funders to foster a unified, coherent brand and build mutually beneficial relationships.
Reporting
- Reports to the Senior Director, Fund Development, Coast Mental Health Foundation.
Strategic Communications and Engagement
- Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communication strategies to support organizational goals, while refining and adapting as the organization and context evolve.
- Actively contribute to CMHF’s fund development strategy, recommending appropriate marketing and communications budget to support activities.
- Manage campaign timelines, assets, and approvals across all channels – digital, print, email, social and in-venue.
- Lead the implementation of a comprehensive brand campaign, including the day-to-day management of external agencies, liaison with stakeholders and roll-out of the final assets, including the development of a new Foundation micro-site.
- Work directly within the tools: build emails, schedule posts, update the website, and pull analytics.
- Collaborate with Coast Mental Health to ensure a consistent narrative and brand strategy.
- Support crisis communications, as needed, in coordination with senior leadership.
- Lead the re-development and implementation of the Foundation’s website.
- Work with Coast Mental Health’s communication team to ensure alignment on strategy, messaging and to align on opportunities across the two organizations.
Donor Communications
- Develop segmented communication plans and messaging support tailored to key donor audiences, including annual, mid-level, leadership, major giving, principal giving and transformational donors, as well as signature events such as the Courage to Come Back Awards.
- Support the development of major and principal gift proposals, cases for support, donor presentations and other customized materials that clearly articulate funding priorities, impact and opportunities for philanthropic investment.
- Manage CMHF’s email marketing program (via MailChimp) including drafting copy, scheduling and sending emails.
Capital Campaign Readiness & Strategy
- Develop communications materials and messaging to support the pre-campaign/quiet phase.
- Build a communications roadmap aligned with campaign timelines and development.
- Ensure alignment between campaign storytelling, brand strategy and fund development priorities.
- Support the development of proposals, cases for support, donor presentations, campaign website and other customized materials that clearly articulate campaign funding priorities, impact and opportunities for philanthropic investment.
Source Content from Across the Organization
- Source and draft impact stories from the organization, ensuring trauma-informed and ethical storytelling practices are always followed.
- Partner with program and facilities staff to gather stories, updates and details that fuel your content.
- Work in collaboration with the Coast Mental Health Society communications team to identify opportunities to share content and repurpose stories across audiences.
- Collaborate with the Senior Director, Fund Development to ensure both fundraising and marketing communications have a cohesive narrative.
- Translate Foundation updates into donor-facing communications that are clear, engaging and on-brand.
- Review and edit written materials produced by other team members before they go external.
- Manage relationships with external vendors and creative contractors (photographers, videographers, printers, etc.)
Brand and Signage Stewardship
- Maintain and apply the CMHF’s brand and style guide consistently across all communications.
- Oversee approval, production and maintenance of interior and exterior signage in partnership with Coast Mental Health.
Strategic Planning and Performance Reporting
- Develop and produce content and support the design and presentation of the Strategic Plan, Annual Donor Gratitude Report and annual operational plans.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Education and Experience Requirements
- 7 years’ progressively responsible experience in strategic communications, marketing, and/or digital marketing.
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in journalism, communications, marketing and/or public relations, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience running integrated, multi-channel campaigns from start to finish.
- Experience executing campaigns tied to major milestones (openings, rebrands, capital campaigns) is an advantage.
- Experience in non-profit sector, specifically in fundraising marketing, is a strong asset.
Skills and Knowledge
- Superior written and verbal communications skills, with a flair for storytelling in print, online and through social media channels.
- Strong project management skills to lead to the development of communications tools/initiatives and meet tight deadlines.
- Adept at using social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) and scheduling platforms like Hootsuite.
- Familiarity with WordPress – content updates, page edits, basic UX improvements Website CMS.
- Working knowledge of Mailchimp or equivalent – list management, segmentation, automation, and analytics.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, strong design eye to brief and direct a graphic designer.
- Experience developing and managing budgets.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the drive to build strong relationships internally and externally.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, and adapt to shifting priorities.
- Expertise in digital applications including Microsoft 365 (Office, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint), strategic applications of Generative AI, social media and media monitoring platforms, website management and hosting platforms, and database applications.
- A high degree of judgment, initiative and discretion.
- Proven ability to be innovative, collaborative and self-driven.
- Professional and/or lived expertise and a commitment to equity, inclusion, belonging, and Reconciliation.
- A personal passion and commitment for the attainment of Coast Mental Health Foundation’s vision and mission, including a deep commitment to mental health, addictions and housing.
- Adaptable to new tools and platforms as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time term role for a period of up to 12 (twelve) months.
The successful person can expect a competitive yearly base salary between $87,372 to $125,597 (midpoint $109,215) depending on skill and experience. Upon hire as a full-time term role, most new employees will be placed at a starting salary between the minimum and midpoint of the stated salary range. In some circumstances, candidates may be eligible for compensation beyond the midpoint. Factors influencing salary decisions include qualifications and years of experience in similar roles. We offer a hybrid work arrangement, with the flexibility to work remotely depending on operational requirements. The candidate must be able to commute to our head office in Vancouver for donor meetings and other in-person meetings and events as required. Flexible working hours can also be offered, depending on operational requirements.
