Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

BSc in Biology or related field is required (Botany, Plant Biology, Agronomy, or Horticulture preferred).

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of directly related experience required.
Demonstrable experience with greenhouse management or operation required.
Experience with pest and pathogen identification is preferred.
Pesticide applicator license is preferred.
An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be able to work with a diverse group of project supervisors and greenhouse users.
Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all aspects of the plant growth, controlled environment facilities including greenhouses and growth chambers in the Faculty of Science.
Responsible for soil preparation, transplanting, fertilizing, watering and weed/ pest control.
Identify pests and pathogens and apply pesticides and fungicides and/or other controls.
Responsible for the oversight of the heating, lighting, refrigeration, safety equipment, etc.
Inspect all facilities and equipment for malfunction and take any remedial or precautionary actions necessary.
Set and oversee operation of Argus (greenhouse computer monitoring) system to regulate greenhouse environment; supply recorded data to users as needed.
Plan and implement seasonal cleaning and maintenance of greenhouse equipment (e.g. evaporative cooling wall), including an annual deep clean (no plants)
Coordinate with Physical Plant on equipment repair/maintenance, waste disposal, and power shutdowns
Respond to situations that may arise during the evening, weekend and holiday periods.
Arrange growth space work allocation to users.
Coordinate billing with the Faculty office.
Coordinate and update emergency procedures and contacts.
Order supplies and parts as needed.
Evaluate controlled environment equipment and supplies on a regular basis.
Participate in the hiring of temporary personnel.
Organize monthly meetings of Controlled Environment Users Committee.
Meet regularly with the Faculty Head Technician to discuss operations and planning. Coordinate, train and supervise personnel in all aspects of the plant growth facility operation and maintenance.
Provide orientation material and liaison with other support staff and academics using the controlled growth facilities to ensure that new greenhouse users are trained in greenhouse biosecurity, biosafety and other safety protocols.
Arrange work schedules of personnel working in the controlled facilities.
Other duties as assigned.
