The Position
The Certified Engineering Technologist plays a critical role in translation customer requirements and engineering designs into clear, accurate work order and Bills of Materials (BOMs) that guide the manufacturing team. As a centerpoint between engineering and production, this role ensures that manufacturing staff have everything they need to complete their work accurately and on-time.
This role requires a detail-oriented professional with strong technical drafting and manufacturing coordination skills, capable of translating engineering and customer requirements into accurate production documentation. The candidate will posses strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer orders, specifications, drawings, and project requirements to fully understand technical and product requirements before documentation is created
- Prepare and revise manufacturing/submittal drawings using CAD software, interpreting engineering designs into production-ready documentation
- Create, maintain, and update accurate BOMs, ensuring correct materials, components, hardware, finishes, and quantities, and maintaining BOM integrity within the ERP/MRP system
- Generate complete work orders for production, including drawings, BOMs, routing, assembly instructions, dimensions, and special requirements
- Verify dimensions, materials, and fabrication requirements, identifying and resolving technical discrepancies before release to production
- Collaborate with drafting/engineering and Purchasing to validate manufacturability, confirm material availability and lead times, and update technical documentation accordingly
- Provide technical support to Production Supervisors and shop floor staff during fabrication and assembly, troubleshooting build or material issues
- Track engineering changes, ensure revisions are communicated accurately, and maintain organized technical files and documentation
- Support continuous improvement, root-cause analysis, and development of engineering standards and design documentation
- Apply knowledge of applicable codes and standards, assist estimating with technical input as needed, and perform additional duties as required
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or related field
- Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) designation preferred
- 2-4 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment is required ; working with custom fabricated products, sheet metal, structural steel, or industrial equipment is considered an asset.
- Hands-on experience preparing BOMs, work orders, and manufacturing/production documentation
- Experience working with ERP/MRP systems
- Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) for drawing creation and revision
- Strong understanding of mechanical drawings and fabrication methods (welding, sheet metal, machining, etc,)
- Familiarity with applicable codes and standards relevant to the product line
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and excellent attention to detail
- Strong problem-solving, organization and critical-thinking skills
- Strong written and verbal communication, with ability to collaborate across teams
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Working Conditions
- Office environment with desk-based activities, such as extended computer use, sitting, or minor lifting (e.g., for office supplies).
- Exposure to a manufacturing environment, including noise, machinery, and material handling areas; appropriate PPE (safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, etc.) required when on the shop floor
