Job Description
The Equipment Operator II (Residential Waste Truck) 14 month term is a key position with the Public Works team and is guided by the organization's policies, procedures, standards, and processes. Reporting to the Roads and Solid Waste Supervisor or designate (or the Superintendent or designate), an Equipment Operator II (Residential Waste Truck) provides a range of services. Responsibilities include the safe and efficient operation of residential waste collection vehicles and equipment for the collection of garbage and recycling throughout the municipality, as well as provide back-up support for the Commercial Garbage truck. In addition to operating residential and commercial waste collection vehicles, the role plays an important part in supporting preventative maintenance activities, identifying mechanical issues, and assisting with the upkeep and functionality of the City’s fleet. The incumbent is expected to perform duties in a safe, professional, and courteous manner while maintaining a high level of service to residents and the public. In addition, you will carry out the physical work across all Public Works operations, including litter pickup, snow shoveling, weeding, line trimming, raking and other related duties. You may be called to take part in the on call rotation.
This position requires a 40 hour work week.
Qualifications

Mechanical aptitude and a minimum of 2 years experience in the operation of large mobile equipment and large commercial vehicles (standard and automatic) such as garbage trucks, dump trucks, and snowplows, in all weather conditions, servicing and routine maintenance of similar equipment and machines engaged in work in municipal settings. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

A minimum of six months of previous experience in the operation of large mobile equipment (tandem), servicing and maintenance of similar equipment, and machines engaged in work in municipal street settings.

A valid BC Driver’s License (Class 3) with air brake endorsement or equivalent and an acceptable driving history.

A safety mindset and working knowledge of safety standards and safe work procedures.

Teamwork and interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with others effectively.

A customer-service orientation.

Ability to communicate effectively (speaking, listening, writing etc).

Ability to work independently and within a team, execute tasks safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate good judgement.

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
