Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Communications Officer, the successful candidate will answer 911 and other calls for emergency assistance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Receive fire alarms, operate telephone and computerized dispatch equipment.
Maintain radio contact with fire service vehicles, both at emergencies and other departmental activities.
Perform system tests, record activities and perform related communications functions as required.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Shift work is required involving evening/night shift (5pm - 7am), day shift (7am - 5pm), weekends and holidays.

Skills and Qualifications

You must be able to deal effectively with the public in stressful situations in a fast-paced emergency response environment.
In addition to demonstrating clear English communication and comprehension skills, your qualifications include:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduation from an accredited post-secondary Emergency Services Dispatch program is a definite asset.
- Emergency communications experience and/or related post secondary education are definite assets.
- Proven keyboarding skills of a minimum 40 words per minute, with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Completion of APCO (Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials) "Public Safety Telecommunicator 1, 7th Ed., Canada" course or completion of NFPA 1061, are definite assets.
- Level 3 – Vulnerable Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Please note that we are hiring for a permanent position, however this position is subject to layoff as per collective agreement.
