Position Summary
The Behavioural Support Worker (BSW) is a cornerstone of our care team, playing a vital role in supporting individuals who face behavioural challenges. Working alongside families, multidisciplinary professionals, and community partners, the BSW promotes positive behaviour, builds personal skills, and enhances the overall quality of life for the individuals in our care.
Using a person-centred approach, the BSW implements evidence-informed strategies and interventions designed to help individuals achieve their personal goals and maximize their independence. This is a hands-on, relationship-driven role that requires compassion, consistency, and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
Key Responsibilities1. Direct Support
- Skill Building: Support individuals in developing daily living skills, emotional regulation, and healthy social interactions.
- Adaptive Behaviour: Encourage and reinforce coping strategies and adaptive behaviours that support long-term wellbeing.
- Empowerment: Foster a positive, inclusive environment that promotes independence and self-advocacy for each individual.
2. Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams
- Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, social workers, and school systems to deliver cohesive, coordinated support.
- Meetings: Attend and actively contribute to house meetings and team discussions to inform comprehensive support planning.
- Communication: Provide timely and accurate updates to team members regarding individual progress, challenges, and changing needs.
3. Documentation and Monitoring
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, detailed records of interventions, observations, individual goals, and progress in accordance with company policy.
- Strategy Evaluation: Continuously monitor and assess the effectiveness of support strategies, making adjustments as required to optimize outcomes.
- Data Collection: Collect and compile relevant data to identify trends, measure outcomes, and highlight areas for program improvement.
4. Crisis Intervention
- Safety First: Apply crisis intervention techniques in a calm and professional manner to ensure the safety and wellbeing of individuals and staff.
- Protocol Adherence: Follow established company protocols for identifying and managing challenging behaviours effectively and ethically.
- Proactive Care: Apply the CHS Proactive Model of Care consistently for each youth to reduce the frequency and severity of crises.
5. Advocacy and Community Involvement
- Individual Advocacy: Champion the rights, needs, and best interests of each individual in all interactions and planning processes.
- Community Integration: Actively facilitate meaningful community participation and social inclusion for individuals in our care.
- Resource Navigation: Connect individuals and their families with appropriate community resources, services, and supports.
6. Policy and Standards Compliance
- Standards of Practice: Familiarize yourself with, and consistently adhere to, all Sheltering Wings and CHS standards of practice as outlined in the Residential Manual.
- Policy Awareness: Stay current on policy and practice updates as communicated by Human Resources and Residential Program leadership.
7. Attendance and Engagement
- Reliability: Adhere to scheduled shift times and follow the company sick day policy with professionalism.
- Professional Development: Participate in monthly staff meetings to strengthen skills, share knowledge, and stay aligned with organizational goals.
- House Meetings: Engage in regular house meetings to collaboratively address the needs of youth and the home environment.
8. House Operations
- Daily Operations: Support and oversee daily household operations including meal preparation, cleaning, and general upkeep when working within a residential setting. In community-based roles, responsibilities shift toward more intensive support, including the facilitation of group and individualized programming and activities.
- Shift Responsibilities: Understand and fulfil all care requirements specific to each shift, including transporting youth to activities and appointments.
- Routine Consistency: Follow established routines set by supervisors to provide predictability and stability for the youth in your care.
9. Quality of Care
- Child & Youth Development: Prioritize the emotional, psychological, and developmental needs of the child or youth in every interaction.
- Program Implementation: Utilize approved programs and frameworks to support the improvement of psychological capacities and life skills.
- Family Reunification: Actively facilitate family connections and communication in alignment with our reunification model.
- Medication Administration: Administer medications in full compliance with professional and ethical standards and organizational policy.
10. First Aid and Emergency Response
- Certification: Maintain a valid Level C CPR and First Aid certification at all times.
- Emergency Response: Provide prompt and appropriate first aid response for any injury or illness that occurs in the home or community setting.
11. Health and Safety
- Safe Environments: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe living environment to prevent incidents and promote wellbeing.
- Incident Prevention: Proactively identify and address safety risks to protect all members of the household.
Qualifications
- Education: A diploma or degree in Social Work, Psychology, Child and Youth Care, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in behavioural support, residential care, or a similar human services role is a strong asset.
- Skills: Demonstrated strengths in communication, problem-solving, conflict de-escalation, and crisis management.
- Certifications: Valid Level C CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start).
- Other: A valid driver’s licence and a satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening are required.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Residential homes and community settings throughout Saskatchewan.
- Schedule: Flexible hours are required, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, in keeping with the operational needs of the home.
Job Types: Part-time, Casual
Part-time hours: 20 per week
Pay: From $17.00 per hour
