About the Role
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for supporting the safe and efficient operation of vessel systems through hands-on mechanical and electrical maintenance. This includes performing routine inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance on equipment such as pumps, HVAC systems, and auxiliary electrical components, as well as diagnosing basic faults using standard troubleshooting methods and tools. The role supports engineers during breakdowns and operational disruptions, assists with equipment installations and modifications, and ensures all engineering spaces are clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards. Responsibilities also include documenting maintenance activities, identifying recurring issues, and adhering to marine safety protocols and Transport Canada regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
General Vessel Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and repairs on mechanical equipment (pumps, HVAC components, fittings, valves, etc.).
- hardware replacement, and general upkeep of vessel systems and spaces.
- Support corrective maintenance and assist engineers during breakdowns or operational disruptions.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of engineering spaces and tool storage.
Electrical Support & Troubleshooting (Noncertified Work)
- Perform routine inspection and basic maintenance of low-voltage and auxiliary electrical systems onboard vessels.
- Diagnose common electrical faults using structured troubleshooting methods (loss of power, intermittent faults, equipment non-start conditions).
- Test circuits using multimeters and basic diagnostic tools to verify voltage, continuity, and grounding integrity.
- Replace and secure non-certified electrical components such as lighting fixtures, terminal connections, fuses, and relays.
- Support operation and monitoring of vessel electrical distribution systems, including shore power connections and panel status checks.
- Assist with cable routing, labeling, and securing in accordance with marine standards and best practices.
- Interpret basic electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to support fault isolation and repair activities.
- Escalate complex or safety-critical electrical issues to certified electricians or engineers as required
Preventative Maintenance
- Carry out scheduled PM tasks across mechanical and minor electrical systems.
- Document findings, deficiencies, and corrective actions in the maintenance management system.
- Identify recurring issues and escalate concerns to Engineering leadership.
Project & Installation Support
- Assist in installing or modifying onboard equipment (lighting changes, pump replacements, sensors, brackets, routing cables, etc.).
- Support contractors by verifying routing paths, securing cables, and preparing equipment or spaces.
- Participate in small improvement projects that enhance safety, reliability, or passenger comfort.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Follow all marine safety protocols, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and engineering best practices.
- Maintain awareness of Transport Canada requirements relevant to onboard maintenance work.
- Participate in drills, safety meetings, and required training programs.
Assigned tasks as needed as per required by the company.
Requirements
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience in an industrial, marine, facilities, automotive, or heavy equipment environment.
- Practical experience with low-voltage electrical systems, including basic troubleshooting, use of multimeters, and replacement of components such as fuses, relays, and lighting & reading basic schematics.
- Ability to use tools such as multimeters, hand tools, and basic electrical testing equipment.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces, engine rooms, and onboard moving vessels.
- Detail oriented, safety-first approach, and able to work independently or alongside engineers/electricians.
Desirable Qualifications
- Marine maintenance experience (vessels, shipyards, or marine terminals).
- Experience supporting electrical distribution, pumps, HVAC, or control systems.
- Familiarity with maintenance management systems.
