Position: Underwriter, Credit Insurance Underwriting (level 16 - 18)
Employment Type: Permanent and Contract
Compensation Details: Salaries are based on qualifications and experience, and typically range as set out below. EDC also offers a performance-based incentive.
- Underwriter level 16: $74,297 - $99,063

Underwriter level 17: $84,698 – $112,931

Underwriter level 18: $96,557 - $128,743
This process will fill multiple current vacancies and will also be used to build a pool for future Underwriter opportunities at levels 16–18 over the next 12 months. Candidates will be assessed at the level that best aligns with their experience and demonstrated capability.
Location:
- Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, with a current requirement of two days per week increasing to three days per week in September 2026 (subject to change).
- This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Halifax or Moncton

Team Overview:
EDC’s Credit Insurance Underwriting group is looking for dynamic and motivated professionals to assist Canadian companies go, grow and succeed internationally. Working in close collaboration with both internal and external partners, the successful candidate(s) will facilitate international trade by helping our customers protect themselves against the risk of non-payment from foreign companies.
What you will be doing:

Build and maintain relationships with internal and external customers, understand their needs, structure appropriate credit insurance coverage, and provide ongoing subject matter expertise and customer service throughout delivery.

Assesses the creditworthiness of foreign companies, understanding the likelihood of a company honoring its obligations through in depth financial and credit analysis (liquidity analysis, leverage & maturity schedules, profitability, cash-flow management, third party\bank support and other factors such as competitiveness, market conditions\elasticity of demand, industry trends);

Participates in developing loss mitigation strategies when allocated credits become at risk;

Identify operational and program-level improvement opportunities, and contribute to process enhancements that streamline operations, improve program results, and support excellent execution.

Depending on your level, manage files of increasing complexity, autonomy, and visibility – from independently handling standard to moderately complex work at level 16, to leading or advising on more complex or irregular transactions at level 17. At level 18, you will lead complex underwriting files end-to-end, providing expert advice across teams, and coaching others by sharing your judgment, underwriting expertise, and approach to decision-making.
What we are looking for:

Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce or other relevant discipline (for all levels).

Solid experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong financial analysis skills.
-
Significant experience leading the successful completion of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across a variety of industry sectors and\or international markets.

Experience structuring and negotiating more complex structures; comfortable meeting with Exporters at Executive and Senior Leadership level in order to assess needs, determine and outline appropriate structures.

Experience working effectively in changing, ambiguous, or matrixed environments.
-
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, collaborate with stakeholders, and provide effective service to internal and external clients.

Experience requirements will vary by level:
-
Underwriter 16: 2–5 years of relevant experience. You can independently manage routine to moderately complex files, contribute to more complex analyses with guidance, and communicate recommendations clearly.

Underwriter 17: 5+ years of relevant experience. You bring strong underwriting experience handling increasingly complex transactions, with the judgment and confidence to lead analyses, navigate challenges, and defend recommendations in broader forums.

Underwriter 18: 7+ years of relevant experience. You bring deep underwriting expertise and experience with complex, high-risk, or high-visibility transactions, along with the credibility and interpersonal effectiveness to influence across the organization and coach others.
What will make you stand out:

International and/or commercial banking experience.

MBA, CFA or CPA designation.

Working knowledge of insurance underwriting principles and practices.

Advanced Excel skills. Coding skills is an asset.

Proficiency in both English and French is a strong asset (fully bilingual).
