The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) provides educational opportunities and programs in an outpatient specialized geriatric services setting to ensure the provision of quality patient care. Using the nursing process as a framework, the CNE develops educational programs to meet the learning and training needs of staff across the program and acts as a resource for staff development and enhancement. The CNE maintains a broad skill set to provide coverage for other CNEs when required. The role also includes responsibility for patient education and the development of tools and programs designed to meet the learning needs of patients receiving care at NBRHC. The Specialized Geriatric Services Outpatients CNE reports to the Seniors’ Mental Health, Geriatric Medicine, and Behavioural Supports Ontario programs. In addition, as part of this composite role, the incumbent participates in the Seniors’ Mental Health Regional Consultation Service (SMH-RCS), providing specialized interdisciplinary outreach services for older adults and their care partners, including comprehensive mental health assessments, diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and follow-up for conditions such as neurocognitive disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, and psychotic disorders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Current Certificate of Registration – College of Nurses of Ontario required
- Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse, Canada (CPMHNC) required
- Graduate of a recognized BScN program required, Master’s in Nursing/Master of Science in Nursing preferred
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
- Gerontology certificate/diploma/degree an asset
- Recent (within 3 years) clinical experience working within the full scope of practice as an RN or Clinical Nurse Educator within a specialized seniors’ mental health and/or geriatric medicine setting required
- Experience in monitoring the transfer of knowledge, which includes identifying/analysing trends, documenting the learning process and its outcomes with quality standards, and informing the development of new policies and procedures required
- Certification and applied knowledge in the following fundamental core competencies: GPA, P.I.E.C.E.S., DementiAbility and Recovery Philosophy required
- Enhanced knowledge of emerging and best practices pertaining to pharmacology in older adults (particularly psychotropic medications), in addition to applied non-pharmacological interventions required
- Experience in leading change processes by involving relevant parties/partners and applying projects management skills to effectively implement and sustain new processes and practice changes required
- Values continuous education and reflective practices by seeking out and initiating applicable professional development opportunities (webinars, catalogue of resources materials, huddles, lunch and learns, etc.) required
- Experience in providing individual and team mentorship to staff required
- Experience in participating in and/or leading relevant committees
Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated RN clinical competence, leadership and applied inter-collaborative skills to promote, facilitate and integrate best practice principles in holistic gerontological care including medical, mental, behavioural, spiritual and physical health required
- Demonstrated cultural awareness and safety in working with older adults and care partners from diverse backgrounds with a person-family focused lens required
- Demonstrated skills and unique abilities to convey knowledge to practice through the effective application of best practice adult learning principles required
- Demonstrated competencies in work collaboratively with team members across varied disciplines to address complex clinical practice issues required
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, along with the ability work in a flexible and self-directed manner required
- Excellent written, oral communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills required
- Good attendance and work record required
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors by contributing to a culture of health and safety required
- Valid driver’s license, willingness to travel to home visits on a regular basis and access to full time use of reliable vehicle is required
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates.
