The Indigenous Recruitment and Student Engagement Officer is responsible for leading recruitment and access initiatives that promote Canadore College and the First Peoples’ Centre (FPC) to prospective Indigenous learners. This includes organizing community outreach, facilitating campus tours, delivering presentations, and representing the College at recruitment events across Ontario. The Officer plays a key role in supporting pathway navigation and coordinating culturally grounded engagement activities that build strong connections with Indigenous communities, high schools, adult learning centres, and educational partners.
In collaboration with FPC staff, institutional departments, and community organizations, the Officer also supports ongoing student retention by contributing to events, initiatives, and culturally relevant programming that promote connection, belonging, and student success throughout the academic year. The role is vital to increasing Indigenous student enrollment and fostering a welcoming and culturally safe environment for Indigenous learners at all stages of their postsecondary journey.
This position requires frequent travel, confident public speaking, and sustained relationship-building with Indigenous communities and partners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Lived experience as a First Nation, Métis, or Inuit person and demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous cultures, communities, histories, and contemporary issues
- Two (2) year Diploma in Business, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Office Administration, Indigenous Studies, Education, Social Services, Community Development, or a related field
- Minimum two (2) years relevant experience in Indigenous education, community outreach, learner engagement, or related field
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive relationships with Indigenous communities, schools, education counselors, Indigenous organizations and community partners
- Experience coordinating events, presentations, workshops, campus visits, community outreach activities, or student engagement initiatives with strong public speaking, facilitation, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and exercise sound judgement
- Familiarity with postsecondary systems and Indigenous education pathways is considered an asset
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and ability to travel extensively. Valid Canadian passport or ability to obtain one required
- In-person, on-campus position. Must be able to reliably commute to North Bay, ON.
DUTIES:
- Represent Canadore College and the First Peoples' Centre at recruitment events, school visits, community presentations, education fairs, open houses, campus tours, and outreach activities.
- Develop and implement Indigenous student recruitment, engagement, and retention initiatives aligned with departmental and institutional priorities.
- Coordinate Indigenous student transition activities including orientation, onboarding, campus visits, student information sessions, and pathway navigation supports.
- Foster Indigenous student engagement, connection, belonging, and success through culturally grounded programming, outreach, peer mentorship, leadership opportunities, and student support initiatives.
- Conduct proactive outreach and follow-up with Indigenous students to support transition, engagement, retention, and overall student success.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external partners to enhance Indigenous student recruitment, engagement, retention, and access to supports and services.
- Develop and implement a recruitment plan aligned with Indigenous education strategies and best practices, informed by data, market research and past experiences
- Track, analyze, and report on recruitment outcomes, presentations, school visits, and event attendance. Provide regular updates to the Director and contribute to strategic planning
- Participate in committees, working groups, institutional initiatives, and other related duties as assigned.
