Full job description

The Opportunity

The Kitchen Assistant (casual), supported by the Kitchen Manager, Kitchen staff, and Relational Care team, will help prepare breakfasts and lunches for members accessing the space at 606 Powell Street. This role is integral in providing meals to members who rely on the Relational Care program and its staff and space for nourishment, medicine, and cultural connection. The space is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, from 08:30am – 1:30pm.

Compensation

Hourly salary is $25.25 per hour.
Hours of work are 07:30am – 1:30pm.
Days of work scheduled based on program needs.

Roles and Responsibilities

Assist the Kitchen Manager and Kitchen team in preparing meals for members accessing the Relational Care space;
Assist the Kitchen Manager and Kitchen team in preparing food for Outreach Workers to deliver to members unable to access the Relational Care space;
Assist the Kitchen Manager and Kitchen team in preparing lunches for community members accessing cross-organizational and community programming;
Maintain kitchen cleanliness and organization in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) set out by Worksafe BC;
Receive and sort food deliveries from suppliers (e.g. SYSCO), donations (e.g. Vancouver-based hotels), and community partners (e.g. Food Runners, Greater Vancouver Food Bank);
Work collaboratively with Kilala Lelum’s Food Security Program Coordinator and community partners such as Inner-City Women’s Initiative Society to ensure a functional, safe, and productive shared kitchen space;
Dispose of garbage and recycling in a sanitary and hygienic manner; and,
Attend Kilala Lelum staff meetings and education sessions, as required and needed.

Qualifications & Skills

Certified FOODSAFE Level 1 (current certification);
At least two years in a kitchen, preferably one that serves communities with multiple barriers to health and wellness equity;
Ability to deal effectively with conflict, manage heightened behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention techniques;
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and maintain good working relationships with colleagues and community partners;
Demonstrated understanding, commitment, and ability to be culturally safe and culturally appropriate with patients;
Knowledge and experience in trauma-informed and strength-based practice, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented care;
Experience working in the DTES is considered an asset;
Experience and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Cultures is considered an asset; and,
Mandatory completion of a cultural competency course through orientation process.

Working Conditions:

Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including remaining on your feet for periods of time throughout the day.
Comfortable communicating with and collaborating across an interdisciplinary team that includes Nurses, Physicians, Outreach Workers, Community Health Workers, and Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
Duties for the position will be performed at the Relational Care Space at Kilala Lelum Health and Wellness Coop Clinic at 606 Powell St.

Supervision Provided

This position is supervised by the Kitchen Manager and the Relational Care Lead.
