Purpose of Position
The Human Resources & Communications Advisor plays a critical dual role in advancing the mission, vision, and organizational impact of the Mine Training Society (MTS). This position supports the development of a strong, engaged, and high-performing workforce while enhancing the organization’s communications, partnerships, and community presence.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Advisor provides both strategic and operational leadership in human resources, employee engagement, organizational communications, and marketing initiatives. The incumbent contributes to a collaborative and culturally respectful workplace that reflects the values of reconciliation, inclusion, and community development.
The Human Resources & Communications Advisor supports MTS’s unique non-profit training partnership model by helping strengthen relationships with employees, Indigenous communities, governments, employers, and other stakeholders. Through effective people practices, communications strategies, and proposal development, the Advisor helps position the organization for long-term sustainability and continued impact across northern communities.
Scope
This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of the Mine Training Society.
The incumbent works closely with staff, external stakeholders, community partners, government representatives, and the public. The position regularly handles sensitive and confidential information and is expected to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, discretion, and integrity at all times.
Key Responsibilities
1. Human Resources Operations, Policy & Compliance
- Coordinate and support the full employee life cycle, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee development, and offboarding.
- Ensure consistent application of employment legislation, employment standards, and MTS administrative policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate personnel records and collaborate with Payroll to ensure employee documentation, benefits, and payroll information are current and complete.
- Monitor attendance, leave management, and HR reporting requirements to ensure compliance and accuracy.
2. Employee Relations & Professional Development
- Provide guidance and support to managers and staff on workplace issues, employee relations, conflict resolution, and HR best practices.
- Coordinate employee training, professional development, and organizational learning initiatives.
- Identify training needs and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs.
- Monitor and coordinate required occupational certifications and renewals, including first aid, driver’s abstracts, and criminal record checks where applicable.
- Promote employee wellness, Indigenous cultural awareness, leadership development, work-life balance, and workplace safety initiatives.
3. Recruitment & Retention
- Develop and maintain job descriptions, interview guides, screening tools, and recruitment processes.
- Coordinate recruitment activities including advertising, candidate screening, interview scheduling, reference checks, and criminal record checks where required.
- Prepare employment documentation and coordinate onboarding and orientation activities.
- Support employee benefits administration, including enrollments, updates, and employee inquiries.
- Assist with performance management processes, including probationary and annual performance reviews.
4. Communications & Marketing
- Develop and maintain internal communication strategies that promote employee engagement, collaboration, organizational culture, and retention.
- Support the development and implementation of external communications and marketing initiatives that enhance awareness of the organization’s mission, programs, and impact.
- Assist the CEO in developing strategic marketing and partnership initiatives that engage northern communities, Indigenous governments and organizations, public governments, employers, and training partners.
- Prepare communication materials, promotional content, and organizational messaging aligned with MTS values and objectives.
5. Proposal Writing, Research & Reporting
- Research and identify funding opportunities including government, foundation, corporate, and Indigenous funding sources that support organizational priorities and long-term sustainability.
- Liaise with funding organizations to gather information and strengthen funding relationships.
- Prepare grant applications, proposals, reports, and supporting documentation in accordance with funding guidelines and deadlines.
- Compile statistics, impact data, case studies, and reports that demonstrate organizational outcomes and community impact.
- Track submitted proposals, approved funding agreements, and reporting requirements.
- Support contribution agreement reporting and ensure compliance with funding obligations.
6. Organizational Support & Other Duties
- Contribute to special projects, cross-functional initiatives, and broader organizational priorities as assigned by the CEO.
- Maintain a collaborative, flexible, and team-oriented approach in supporting organizational objectives and operational needs.
- Demonstrate adaptability and willingness to take on new challenges in a dynamic non-profit environment.

- Maintain strict confidentiality in handling employee, organizational, and stakeholder information.

Qualifications
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained through:
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in human resources and/or communications.
- Experience in proposal writing, research, grant coordination, and marketing.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience working with Indigenous organizations and communities is considered a strong asset.
- Experience working within a non-profit governance environment is considered an asset.
Pay: $45.00-$60.00 per hour
