Position Summary
The Program Supervisor plays a highly hands-on leadership role, working directly alongside staff, children, and families in daily program operations. This position is rooted in on-the-floor supervision, ensuring programs are delivered safely, consistently, and with high quality in real time.
Rather than primarily administrative oversight, this role requires active presence in program spaces, providing immediate guidance, modeling best practices, and supporting staff in the moment. The Program Supervisor ensures a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for children while maintaining strong relationships with families and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Frontline Supervision & Daily Program Support
- Provide active, on-the-floor supervision during program hours
- Work directly with children and families alongside staff as needed
- Monitor program flow in real time to ensure safety, engagement, and quality
- Step in to support staff during busy or high-needs situations
- Address issues immediately and proactively within the program environment
- Ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally respectful atmosphere
Staff Support & Coaching
- Provide daily guidance, mentorship, and real-time coaching to program staff
- Model appropriate interactions, behaviour management, and engagement strategies
- Support staff in managing challenging behaviours using trauma-informed approaches
- Assist with staff scheduling and ensure proper coverage on the floor
- Conduct informal check-ins and contribute to formal performance evaluations
Program Implementation
- Ensure programs are delivered as planned and meet organizational standards
- Adapt activities in the moment to meet the needs of children and families
- Maintain consistent routines and structure within program settings
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and policies during daily operations
Family & Community Interaction
- Build strong, positive relationships with children and families daily
- Communicate directly with caregivers regarding program participation and concerns
- Support a welcoming environment where families feel safe and respected
- Represent Children First Society in community spaces as needed
Safety & Well-being
- Maintain a high standard of supervision to always ensure child safety
- Respond immediately to incidents, conflicts, or concerns
- Ensure staff are following proper supervision ratios and safety procedures
- Document and report incidents as required
Administrative Support (Secondary Focus)
- Assist with program planning and scheduling
- Track attendance and basic program data
- Contribute to reports and program evaluations
- Support implementation of policies and procedures
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Diploma or degree in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Early Childhood Education, or a related field
- Equivalent experience will be considered
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of direct frontline experience working with children, youth, or families
- Demonstrated experience in hands-on program delivery and supervision
- Experience supporting or mentoring staff in a team environment
Skills & Competencies
- Strong ability to lead by example in a fast-paced, active environment
- Excellent observation and decision-making skills in real time
- Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills
- Knowledge of child development, behaviour support, and trauma-informed care
- Cultural competence, particularly working with Indigenous children and families
- Ability to remain calm, flexible, and responsive in dynamic situations
Other Requirements
- Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Valid driver’s license (preferred)
Working Conditions
- Primarily on-site and program-floor based role
- Requires standing, walking, and active participation in programs
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required
