Job Summary & Key Responsibilities

The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching: SLWK 6001, “Theories and Practices of Anti-Oppressive Social Work in Diverse and Intersecting Communities”. The course will be offered in the Winter term, from January-April 2027. Classes will be held Tuesdays from 8:35-11:25 Note: this is a campus course and part of the MSW program.

Course description: Racism, colonialism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression are in conflict with the “caring” notion of the social work profession. Multiple forms of oppression frame everyone’s life. Social work intervention may reinforce oppression, condone it through non-action or notions of neutrality, or challenge oppression. The aim of this course is to unravel the underlying threads of multiple and intersecting oppression and the various sources and forms of oppression and to develop practice strategies that seek to challenge oppression.

The part-time academic will be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including preparing and delivering lectures, grading of assignments, and consultation with students. In addition, the part-time academic should expect to be engaged in course preparations for one-two months preceding course delivery.

Qualifications/Requirements of Position

A critical approach to understanding various forms of oppression (e.g. racism, colonialism, sexism, homophobia, ableism) as it applies to social work practice. A Master of Social Work degree, or higher, and previous teaching experience.
